A great way to integrate simplistic on-demand writing. Have students answer a target question in short answer format, including, the main point, most surprising concept, most confusing area of the topic, and what questions from the topic may appear on the next test.

Formative Assessment 8: KWL Chart (the "L" portion)

While a KWL chart is a great way to discover students prerequisite knowledge, and what misconceptions they may have, it is also a great way to see what they learned. To make is more personalized, I would have the student write their name on a sticky note, write what they learned about the topic, and stick it under the "L" portion of the chart. That way, I can see who learned what.

Before the lesson give students flashcards. Project a series of different images and have the students write about what they believe the image is or means (could be a person, event, process, etc.), at the end of the lesson have students flip cards over and re-write what they think each picture is, and the effect of the person/thing/event. This will be a measure of what they learned.
In the example below, the students may not know who this is, but at the end of a lesson on WWII, they should be familiar with his face and what he did.
