Claim: Paris Climate Accords in line with sociological liberalism.
Explicit Assumption: Relations of groups/ people/ organisations/ societies on the transnational level are more important than the ones between governments. That creates a new form of society, increase sense of community.
Implicit Assumption: Transnational ties are important because they have an impact on everyone.
Background assumption: Locke: There can be cooperation in the state of nature because of the 'goodness' of human nature.

Institutional liberalism
Institutions are the main actors in international relations. It is the institutions that make cooperation possible between states by alleviating problems concerning lack of trust (which are typical in this anarchical nature between states in the international arena).

—> Kant
- International institutions are conducive to cooperation between states by strengthening economic ties and trust and formalising diplomatic relations.
—> Locke
- The SoN is not all that bad and can be contained. It does not necessarily imply conflict and cooperation is possible in it. This is similar to the liberal view that the SoN is anarchic between states but that cooperation is possible.

The states involved in the Climate Accord felt more trust amongst themselves because it was an international institution that organized the treaty and every state had an equal stance in signing it, no state had more power in the formal sense. The accord was seen as more justifiable because there was an international consensus on how to solve this global problem. This makes the implementation of climate policies easier as the international community can monitor the performance of other states in the accord under the governance of the institution (accountability between states that leads to trust).

Classical liberalism
A theory of international relations that is based on a positive view of human nature. It emphasises cooperation over conflict and believes in progress of human society. Classical liberals believe that the anarchical state of nature between states still allows for cooperation. Modernisation creates strong economical ties between states which makes their interests merge and cooperation easier.
