Mount Vesuvius is still regarded as an active volcano. It has experienced 8 (major) eruptions in the last 17,000 years - the earliest being the famous eruption in 79AD which destroyed the city of Pompeii, and the most recent being in 1944 during WW2. Nobody was killed in the 1940's eruption, as the flowing lava and moving gases were slow enough to evacuate the closest cities in the "danger zone", but it was widely reported upon as it happened so close to the Allied Forces base in Naples (it was also exciting for the reporters not to have to write about war casualties for the first time in years).
