One of the external conflicts that occur is when they're hiding Ellen, Annemarie's best friend from the Nazis. They pretend she is one of there kids which causes the solders to uproar about having a dark haired child when the other two were blonde. It goes as far as toslapping Mrs. Johansen and pulling on Ellen's hair. This is a critical part of the book because this was the closest they've been to getting caught.

During the end of book they try to save the Rosen's and other Jewish people. Peter gives Mr. Rosen an important packet, he drops it on the way there. We later find out that inside the packet theirs a handkerchief that helps masked the scent of the hidden Jewish people on the boat so the dogs cant sniff them out. Annemarie's mother broke her ankle so 10 year old Annemarie has to run across the forest toward the harbor to save her family and friends. This creates a big conflict in the novel because she has to make it in time, if she doesn't she may loose her loved ones.

On her way to taking the secret package to her uncle Henrik they stop her to search her things.

I think Rupert Grint portrays Peter very well. Hes a ginger for one and he represents peters height perfectly. Peter cares about others more than he cares about himself. Annemarie and Kirsti look at Peter as a brother. He's also the fiance of Lise who is the Johansen's daughter that passed away. He later dies at the of the novel for protecting and helping jews escape.

"Dead in the water" by Ellie Goulding reprsents the novel perfectly. The song talks about how she's in the water, in the book to get to Sweden you had to take a boat across the giant lake. This song also talks about death and we lose characters throughout the novel, for example Peter and Lise. Overall the meaning of the song can be connected to "Number the stars" for multiple reasons.
