His importance today

While General Pershing was a great commander in his time, his greatest legacy may be the implementation of conducting significant after action studies of the war, so that future military commanders may learn from his experiences. As part of this effort, he expanded the importance of professional education among military leaders. Consequently, he created the Army Industrial War College. Additionally, his leadership approach is a hybrid of classic military leadership and modern business leadership, which has formed the foundation for today's successful military and business leaders.

General Pershing was known as a managerial commander, which was a different approach to generalship than what had been done in the past. Pershing was a man that recognized the talent in others and was able to delegate tasks to the most appropriate person to see it through. This made him different from commanders of the past in that he was not on the front line, but rather in the command area with his delegate generals on the front lines.

General Pershing was a great leader, but not everyone saw it that way. Some of the Allied leaders did not like his resistance to their ideas and thought that his American soldiers should jump in line with the others. To the American, this approach was appropriate and critical to maintaining an independent American Army.
