In this scene Michael and Bobeshi are coming home and are getting off the train. I chose this section because to me it illustrates how truly horrible the Holocaust was, it made people scared and even when others are being polite and making kind gestures. They become frightened and cling to their loved ones and belongings and “forget how to speak” when people outing of their families interact with them. This make me realize more than before how during the Holocaust it really was fending for your self and trying your best to keep your loved ones and things.

In this scene Michael is talking about his illness and the documents which have his information on it and how he would like to know what illness he had. I chose this quote because it really signifies and represents how miracles can in fact happen, and that these two getting ill essentially saved their lives. I think that this is very important especially to the plot of the story.

In this passage Michael’s cousin Ruth is listening to her mother sing and is convincing herself it’s not her mother because she’s been living in the church and has no memories of her. Ruth then turns around and sees it is her mother and they reunite in a hug. This quote is important to me because it shows you that a bond especially with your parents or family can not be broken over time no matter what happens

In this quote Michael and his mother are being separated as she leaves to go to a different camp. I chose this quote because it shows how broken Michael is and it’s very saddening to me. At such a young age he is forced to go through so much pain, after losing other members if his family he is now getting separated with his mother. Michael says that he is numb with hurt and that is a very sad thing to hear especially from such a young child.

In this passage Aunt Hilda is coming home with her friend Nico, Nico is telling her that their is a large group of one family that survived and made it back to Zarki. Aunt Hilda then realizes that this is her family and she returns to them. I chose this quote because to me it shows again that miracles can happen, most of her family survived and returned to their home and that is also crucial to the plot of the story.

In this scene Aunt Hilda and her friend Abigail are in a concentration camp doing their labor which was packing guns, and Abigail has the idea to not fill every third bullet to help save at least some lives. I chose this quote because it shows that Abigail still has a little humor during the worst times.
