The target audience is vital when it comes to the filming industry, as without an audience there would be no one to watch the film and therefore the company producing the film would lose out on the money spent to produce the film. Taking this into account, the reason it is so important to narrow down the target audience, is so I am able to understand what it is I need to look for when creating my product, to entice the audience and encourage them to watch the film. Throughout the project I have used my target audience research to help in my decision making, so I could aim to target a particular type of audience. In doing this I was able to construct my products around what my target audience may enjoy. This will help to market and sell my product. On top of this, I was also able to receive feedback on how the construction of my products could have been used, as well as researching into initial ideas for my product. All feedback that I received from my audience was presented in a rich media format, and was uploaded to my blog.

Questionnaires

When beginning my target audience research, I started by creating a questionnaire, and asked a range of people about what they would consider to be suitable conventions of a horror film. Within this questionnaire, I asked things such as what type of music they would relate to a horror movie. In doing this, I was able to receive a range of feedback, allowing me to both narrow down my target audience, as well as use the feedback received to help me in constructing my short film. Following this, I was then able to question my target audience with another questionnaire, asking them about their hobbies and interests, as well as things such as their favourite colour and place typical places they like to eat. In doing this, I was able to gain an idea to where I could advertise my products for marketing purposes.

From the second questionnaire I was able to create a viewer profile, detailing my target audiences hobbies and interests. The viewer profile showed detailed information about my own production company, Halfmoon Entertainment's viewers. Doing this has given me an idea to how I could use this information to market my product, which would help ensuring my product is seen by the right sort of people.

Interview

Additional target audience research I had done includes an interview. Interviewing a member of my target audience took place in order to help me define the components I was planning to include within my short film. The response to the questions asked was useful and helped me to construct a film, better suited to my target audience, as I was able to receive large amounts of input from both this interview and my questionnaire. The interview took place and was filmed on a Canon camera. I placed the camera on a tripod and placed it behind myself, using an over the shoulder shot to show the interviewee answer the questions that I was asking. This was an effective was of recording the interview and when looking back at the recording I was able to use the information gathered. The editing done for this interview took place on the editing software Windows Live Movie Maker.

Screening

A screening took place after the assembly edit when constructing my short film. The assembly edit for my short film was presented to muliple members of my target audience and they were then asked to complete a questionnaire I had created. This questionnaire gave me audience feedback, which helped me to further develop the film and ensure I met the target audience requirements. This questionnaire was successful and allowed me to make alterations to my short film where necessary, as well as giving me an indication to how well the short film was at the current stage. From this response, I felt like I was more confident in the editing stages of my short film, and was able to experiment with the way the film looked. For example, a colour grading was used due to the feedback, as well as ensuring the lighting was consistant throughout.
