I use KWL charts often in my classroom. I especially like when students share the "k" portion because it gives me a good idea of what they already know about a topic before we learn more. I like to think that I use multiple means to present various information, but I know I can always get better at that. I really liked the tips about helping students set goals for their learning. Goals help students take ownership of their learning, and that's important.

Tori

I use multiple means through worksheets/activities using paper/pencil, hands-on activities, literacy/math centers, SmartBoard, and Chromebook use. I use graphic organizers with students when we are reading books rather than the stories from the curriculum. The curriculum stories tend to have activities at the end that relate to the story/topic.

I would like to be able to give students more choices on how to show me what they know but, I find it challenging to plan two-three options for 3-5 students. Students creating their own goals would be a good idea to implement. It would take time for me to teach them how to set goals but, it is a skill necessary for later in life.

Hilari

I've used KWL charts in the past. With my current students we do book walks prior to reading stories and talk about what we see in the pictures and make a hypothesis as to what the main idea or topic will be. My students are also given the chance to listen to the books after we read them on raz-kids, and take them home to read to parents. We also play reading games such as sight word Bingo and Zingo.
In math I use a combination of math apps, various manipulatives, and worksheets to teach skills.
In science I try to use manipulatives, short videos, stories, experiments and various activities to support the concepts of what I'm teaching.
I use more of the ULD framework than I thought I did. On piece I could try to improve more on would be activating prior knowledge.
Tiffany

I try to use UDL everyday when I'm teaching. I especially relate to concept 3, which discusses engagement of learners. If our learners are not engaged in what we are trying to teach, they aren't going to learn. We've all experienced that. I think about how many times I've been taught a concept and it doesn't click until I'm truly involved. I also think activating schema is important and can be generalized into reading and writing through lessons. Regardless, instruction should be individualized and tailored to what each learner needs.

I have small groups all day and each student is pretty unique. I think I do a good job of giving variety and allowing the student to do what works best for them. We call it advocating for yourself. One thing I think I need to do better is setting goals. I set goals for everything, but I think it would be a good idea to have the students set their own goals and monitor how they do with those.

Cecilia

Teaching students primarily with learning disabilities, I try to utilize UDL in my classroom as much as possible. It's definitely something you have to be cognizant about and intentionally use. Some things do come more naturally now, but it's always good to reassess what teaching strategies your using and what is working. I think we're pretty good about activating prior knowledge in our classroom. It really does help the students make those connections early on so that everything else that follows can build on that prior knowledge. I think after this presentation I will be more aware of utilizing UDL in all three areas: multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement.
Patti
