1. Statistics is different from mathematics. Statistics is the analysis of data and then the implications. (Context matters!!)
2. Four step process: Formulating questions, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting the results.
3. Different types of graphs (and other data representations) provide different information about the data. The choice of how the data is represented will affect how well the data is understood.
4. Measures that describe data with numbers are called statistics.
5. The shape of data provides a big picture of the data rather than a collection of numbers. Graphs and statistics can provide a sense of the shape - spread out or clustered.
(p.544)
6. Common Challenges and Misconceptions Related to Data and Statistics page (p.547-548)

1. Statistics is more than just creating graphs and analyzing data. One of the more important parts is asking and answering questions. To do this students must have the background knowledge and literacy skills to form a question related to the data. (p.549)
2. "Who Is in Our Village?" Activity: Use books to help students find data, create background information, and compare their lives to what is happening in the book. (p.550)
3. Use existing resources: Newspapers, almanacs, sports record books, maps, government publications, etc can be used to find real life data. Teachers can even use a book they have been reading in their language class such as "Goodnight Moon" or "Green Eggs and Ham" to tally and graph repeated words or phrases. (p.553)
4. Web resources can also be utilized. Ex: Olympic records, U.S Government open data, Google Public Data Explorer, etc. (p.554)
