They wanted to teach us that no matter what you do, hard work and trusting in the people that are always going to have your back is what's going to help you succeed. That is my guess.

I think this book was assigned to us because it shows to never give up and be brave. Also, if the main character was like an adult or something, they probably would not have assigned it to us. But, since it is a kid, it gives us a good example to be better people by helping and caring for other as well as to be brave and to never give up.
