As a facilitator, one should refrain from making assumptions though it can be challenging at times. Express feeling based on the information that is presented in front of you. Ask for clarity; aim to understand the situation, where group members reasoning are coming from instead of making preconceived assumptions. Let the group know what exactly is playing out in front of you as you see it. Try to be honest with your words and expression and solicit feedback from your interactions.

\MS

M1 Assignment 1 - Darrell StevensMy advice is slow down, be open to other’s opinions, not jump to conclusions and listen. Of course, I need to take my own advice! One skill I’ve been working on is listening properly. “Many people listen with the intent to respond, not to understand”.Our mindset has been so engrained in us through life experiences. This unilateral control mindset will be a challenge to fully understand how it shapes us and how to grow as a leader. Looking forward to understanding more about my values and assumptions and how they support/control behavior in different environments and roles.

Performing these interviews gave me an insight on the issues different individuals are faced with at the College; this also enabled me to look at their challenges through their lens.

What was also enlighten about the process, I too had my personal bias. In my thoughts, I would regard an issue as a non-issue but after asking the questions of my colleague and how they explained from their point of view. I gained an appreciation for the mutual learning approach to facilitation; as I was able to understand why these issues were such a pain point and how it affected them directly. The question that asked them, if they were the boss what would they do to address the problem? allowed them to wear the shoe of the person in charge.

In that question, after reviewing each of their responses, they still made a recommendation based on what they believe was appropriate without questioning what the entire picture was. As the facilitator, one would now have explore why management took the approach they did, under what circumstances decision was made and employee’s feedback on issues and ensure all parties are communicated to.

Donna Cann
The advice I would offer to increase effectiveness in working with groups would be always be mindful of your own interactions but also of the participants as well. It is important to know your behaviors, values and assumptions to avoid negativity, or lack of trust within the group. The area that I would need to focus on based on unilateral Control behaviors would be around difficult conversations. I don’t like conflict as like many try to avoid it. I recognize I may assume how the conversation will go before it takes place, or during the conversation, by doing this I am not getting to the root cause or truly understanding the group or the issue. Within the unilateral control mindset, I also draw on “minimize expression of negative feelings.” Expressing feelings or discussing what the issue is makes people more uncomfortable. Asking the group to describe in one word only how they are feeling is enough to allow all members a chance to speak. I look forward to learning more about the Unilateral Control Approach and how to better adopt the strategies

“I understand the situation: Those who disagree don’t” – This assumption is true to some situations where I have been in. It is important as a facilitator to listen to all group members. Jumping to conclusions without knowing the why or how could create more misunderstandings. Ask questions and keep an open mind during conversations. Allow individuals time to explain their ideas.

Getting over the fear of being uncomfortable, facing opposing views, and being direct in your language can save time, uncover relevant information, and allow for better decision-making and more trust.

Lessons learned from completion of a self assessment on how I facilitate revealed areas that I have felt yet did not have the terminology to describe it. It was no surprise to me. I am interested in moving from the unilaternal control mindset to a mutual learning mindset. A piece of advice I would offer myself to increase facilitation with groups results in changing my behaviors. I would advise myself that it is okay to have those difficult conversations as a group in order to develop an open, safe learning environment. It is okay to address this as not addressing it leads to decrease learning for students as well as increased stress. I am able to have these conversation with smaller groups for the most part but larger groups are more challenging. Looking forward to learning more about how to best work on this behaviour.
