A pre-listening activity is important to contextualize the learners about what is happening in the listening material they are going to work with.

Through their background knowledge, they can infer the human activity that is taking place, identify the people involved, and understand the topic. This can help to diminish the difficulties of listening in a foreign language by providing context. In the selection of the pictures, we take into account the most important participants and elements.

This schemata-activating process helps the learner to prepare for listening by checking vocabulary, ascertaining background knowledge that is essential for understanding, gaining a hint of what the topic is, and exploring any contextual factors that might otherwise make the listening difficult.

The teacher will divide students into 2 groups. One group will ask questions as the journalist in the interview and the other group will think possible answers to those questions as the interviewed, Alec Balwin, would answer. They will produce no more than 3 questions with their corresponding answers to add at the end of the video.

Steps:

Firstly, everybody in the journalist group will have to agree on a question they would ask Alec Baldwin if they were the journalist on the video and they will share it with the other group orally. After that, the Alec Baldwin group will agree on a possible answer to that question (as if they were Alec Baldwin himself) and they will also share it with the other group so they continue a coherent interview with another question. This can be repeated 2 or 3 times.

Variation:

If it is too difficult for a group to create the questions or the answers, they can swap personalities so every group would have done a question and an answer.

The 'after-listening' activity will be a production to check students' comprehension of the topic

The register includes three elements:

The Field is the WHAT and expresses the purpose for using the language. In this case the speaker, Alec Baldwin, is justifying Halyna's death from his point of view.

The Tenor is the WHO, the participants of the human activity and it expresses the relationship between them. There are two tenors, the American actor Alexander “Alec” Baldwin, who comes from a family of actors, he has been an actor for more than 40 years and has participated in more than 80 films. And the interviewer George Stephanopoulos, an American journalist and television host, that we cannot see here because it is an extract from a longer interview. In this passage, Alec is trying to sympathize with the interviewer and the audience, trying to appeal to their emotions. He emphasizes that he and Halyna were friends and that he did not do anything wrong, they were just working and it was an accident.

The Mode is the HOW, it allows the textual function to manifest through a channel, oral or written. In this case, it is an interview face to face and the channel is spoken language.
