Each chapter has a different way about it. I feel the songs in the first chapter and the adventure in the next.
The way the songs and text is presented it feels as though you're also a dwarf joining the journey to the lonely mountain.

I think the lesson to the text is that together no matter what happens if you believe in your own power to do a task you will always do it to the best of your ability.
The hobbit burglar Bilbo Beggins learned this on his journey to and from the lonely mountain. Tolkien has always been one to take little unexpected heroes and turn them into just that.

The books effect on the lives of those it touches: The book speaks of unfortunate and unexpected adventures. Yet at the end you know the protagonist will succeed. I think the message was that everyone has the power to push on they just have to look deep inside themselves. In Bilbo's case the Took side of his heritage, His most adventurous side.
