After the pandemic there were immense impacts on the world. Dubai due to its advancements in technology was able to recover from the effects. And also due to many new advancements in technology tourism has increased more in Dubai rather than Switzerland. Many new structures and manmade monuments have increased the population of tourists coming to Dubai. Though people are coming to Dubai people are still visiting Switzerland for its natural and cultural sights. Even though the tourist population has increased in. Dubai the tourists are still visiting Switzerland for its food and cultural and historical monuments.

Critical Thinking

Introduction:

Switzerland is well-known for its beautiful natural scenery. It consists of spectacular mountains and forests and is renowned for its dairy farming, cheese, and chocolate. Dubai, on the other hand, is another tourist spot, which relies more on artificial tourism. With modern buildings and splendid architecture, it is of its league.

Main Differences (in real-time):

The main difference between the two places is obvious. Dubai, originally a desert, consists entirely of man-made, artificial tourist attractions. It has many theme parks, works of architecture, shopping malls, and other indoor attractions. However, Switzerland consists of natural attractions, like Lake Geneva and the Matterhorn. Its tourism focuses on the naturally beautiful landscape and the scenery. There is a climate difference too. Dubai, a desert is extremely hot in summer while Switzerland is known for its cold climates and winter sports.

Recovery of Dubai after pandemic:

Dubai's numerous attractions such as its malls and entertainment have played a significant role in its tourism recovery post-pandemic. The city's health policies and health measures made it a safe destination again when the pandemic brought tourism to a standstill. Additionally, Dubai's strong economic performance and strategic marketing campaigns have attracted a large number of international visitors. According to a newspaper article from Khaleej Times, Dubai was one of the leading cities to recover after the pandemic in tourism.

Recovery of Switzerland after pandemic:

Switzerland's tourism sector, on the other hand, relies heavily on its natural landscapes, such as the Swiss Alps. During the pandemic, tourism came down drastically, due to strict policies. Swiss residents played a significant role in the recovery by increasing their travel within the country. In 2021, there was a 17% increase in overnight stays by Swiss residents compared to 2019. They practiced sustainable trends which attracted more tourists from Europe. There were positive changes such as the weather being ideal which contributed to the recovery of Switzerland.

Conclusion:

To conclude, Dubai's modern attractions and initiatives have led to a fast recovery, while Switzerland's natural landscapes and sustainable tourism practices have ensured a steady return of visitors.

- Saikrishaa Saravanaganesh

1)

First of all, Dubai is a desert and it is a very arid region due to it's heat, while Switzerland is a very cold region. Dubai is a very rich country, one of the richest in the world in fact, and this is a country of tourism as this country consists of many tourist places due to it's richness. It also consists of skyscrapers as it is very rich.

Since it is a desert, it's scenic view of nature is not up to the point. ON the other hand, Switzerland is a country of nature. This is also a country of tourism but not for it's richness, but for it's nature and beautiful landscapes. Over here, there are so many mountains and mountain ranges, rivers, and many more. You can go on many road trips to so many places in Switzerland. If you want to go to a nice, calm and relaxing vacation, Switzerland would be your first option. Both country's are good in their own ways.

Impact Analysis

Introduction

Dubai and Switzerland are two places whose main source of income is tourism. However, both countries feature different types of tourist attractions. During the pandemic, tourism suffered a huge blow. As a result, the rate of tourism in both countries has changed.

Impacts of the Pandemic

As stated before, the pandemic drastically impacted tourism in both countries. Here is an overview:

Switzerland: Tourism took a major hit in Switzerland during COVID-19. According to a research article by National Institute of Health, during the first nine months of 2020, the number of nights spent in hotels dropped by 39.4% relative to the same period in 2019, from 31.5 to 19.1 million. Domestic guests diminished by 10.9% (from 14.1 to 12.5 million) and to some extent saved the business, but they could not compensate the loss of 62.5% (from 17.4 to 6.5 million) among foreign visitors (BfS, 2020).

Dubai: Tourism in Dubai also suffered consequences during the lockdown. As tourism is one of the key industries in Dubai, this is expected. In 2020, Travel & Tourism’s GDP contribution in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi dropped by more than half. In Dubai it fell to AED 19.5BN and in Abu Dhabi it fell to just AED 6BN. This is in comparison to Travel & Tourism’s GDP contribution in 2019, when in Dubai, tourism was responsible for contributing an impressive 11.5 per cent in GDP value, Dubai’s tourism sector was ranked one of ‘Top 10’ strongest economic share generators, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Cities Report 2019.

After the pandemic

As the COVID-19 cases declined, both countries began easing their restrictions. However, the strategies the countries used to re-entice tourists to their attractions contrasted, and the difference in their success rates was noticeable. Here are some examples of that:

Dubai: In the first half of 2023, a staggering 8.5 million globetrotters chose Dubai as their destination, breaking the city’s record for number of visitors. Fast forward to July 2023, and that number has surged to a jaw-dropping 9.83 million. Freshly released data by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism also reveals that in 2022, Dubai hosted 14.36 million international overnight visitors. By comparison, in 2021, just 7.26 million stayed overnight. During 2022, Dubai reached 86% of its pre-pandemic visitor levels, beating even the most optimistic projections by the United Nations World Tourism Organization for international tourist arrivals in 2023. This bounce-back is largely due to the adaptability of Dubai. Dubai’s robust tourism rebound is testament to the success of its multi-pronged strategy to combat COVID-19. Inspired by its visionary leadership, Dubai rapidly initiated a comprehensive citywide management of the pandemic. The provision of a relief package worth over AED 7.1 billion combined with a phased reopening of key sectors and Dubai Tourism’s strong collaboration with local stakeholders and over 3,000 partners worldwide, helped the industry chart a steady course for recovery. This growth has been supported by initiatives like Expo 2020, which was rescheduled to 2021. The Expo played a pivotal role in reviving tourism, bringing in millions of visitors and generating over $7 billion in economic output. The city has once again demonstrated its ability to bounce back and innovate, making it a leading destination for tourists worldwide.

Switzerland: Tourism in Switzerland has largely been able to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels. Switzerland showed significant growth in overnight stays by domestic guests compared to international guests in 2023. This trend is expected to continue, with domestic overnight stays increasing more than the population and employment growth rate. European markets have largely returned to pre-pandemic trends, with domestic tourism booming in countries like Germany, France, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands.

Long-haul markets have seen notable shifts in travel behavior, particularly in Asia. Chinese tourists' overnight stays in Switzerland increased steadily from 2005 to 2019 but were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, tourism in Switzerland has largely returned to pre-pandemic patterns, with a persistent trend towards domestic tourism. This recovery has been bolstered by the introduction of sustainable tourism in the form of the Swisstainable program. The Swisstainable program, launched in 2021, aims to make Switzerland the most sustainable travel destination in the world under the slogan "Get Natural." Over 2,700 partners have engaged in the program, with varying levels of certification. However, some partners are involved for marketing reasons rather than genuine sustainable development.

The program's success depends on a commitment to sustainability rather than merely chasing certification. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) established 50 years ago provides criteria and standards for sustainable tourism. The Swisstainable program aligns with these standards, aiming to enhance Switzerland's sustainability credentials.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both Dubai and Switzerland have managed to effectively recover their tourism industry after the pandemic, with Dubai emphasizing on improving infrastructure and thriving with a modern outlook while Switzerland focused more on sustainable tourism and maintaining the beauty of its natural landscapes.

- Niranjana Balasubramanian
