1. What's going on in this picture?

There's a lady eating white snakes. I think that she conquered the snakes and is eating them as her reward. She seems very self-assured, maybe even proud.

2. What do you see that makes you say that?

She's sitting, resting her feet on the snakes. Her body language and expression suggest a sense of pride, victory of some sort. There's blood, maybe from the snakes, on her mouth and feet, which again suggests that she defeated them. Maybe the red lines behind her are a bloody imprint of where the snakes were?

3. What more can you find?

Lots of patterns (behind her in the circle and around the circle, on the floor, on her dress). Maybe the patterns are emblematic of some sort of ritual?

Seems like she is Indian, based on her manner of dress and complexion.

Collage

I started making my collage simply by looking for pictures that resonated with me. I didn’t have any particular vision or statement in mind. Instead, my goal was to pick out images that intrigued me, arrange them in an aesthetically pleasing manner, and see what resulted.

Now that I’m done, I notice a couple of themes. First, there’s a zaniness to a few of the images that I selected. There’s a fox riding a bicycle, a bear playing a guitar, and a man floating in a pool, all of which strike me as intentionally somewhat humorous. In general, I tend to like whimsical aesthetics, so that is probably why I was drawn to these pictures. Second, many of the images are of people. I think I’m drawn to images of people because they have a strong capacity to tell a story. For instance, when I see the image of the man in the pool, I immediately wonder what his story is.

I also didn’t want any one image to dominate the collage; instead, my hope was that it would seem like all the images worked in harmony with one another, with no particular image standing out above the others. For the most part, I think that I achieved this, although were I to do this project again, I would probably tear off a bit more of the fox image to create space for the others.

We've talked a lot in this class about making the familiar strange through the artistic process. Effectively, this means becoming comfortable with an unfamiliar approach. As I looked back on my work, I realized that over the past seven-ish weeks, I have gradually become more and more used to taking creative risks. Thus, my journey has been one of Embracing the Unfamiliar.

Please enjoy this tour through my Arts Integration Portfolio!
