That is one of the themes because in the text, Jonas and Gabriel went on a journey to elsewhere. Along the way, they came across quite a few problems. For example, one of the problems was when the search planes were constantly looking for Gabriel and Jonas. Jonas would have to quickly bike over to the nearest hiding place and take cover there. But, Jonas remembered that the planes had body warmth detectors so Jonas had to give the memories of snow to Gabriel to make them both cold. A message about the society in The Giver, is that everyone has to get along. For example, when someone would do something a bit rude, people would pull you aside, give a big talk to you about how you shouldn't do that and they would try to teach you a lesson.
