The Nullification crisis was where Southern states were angered about the raise in taxes, and nullified a lot of laws set by the federal government. The Southern states built their own army, and in response, Andrew Jackson lowered the tariff on imported goods to try to prevent civil war. Eventually, they did end up going to war though, and the states and federal government are still questioning how they can come up with a solution.
