When it rains, particularly during king tides, the road is so flooded that I often must take different routes to work. I am afraid that one day I will find myself in a situation where I cannot turn around or my car gets stuck. I have found that Charleston flooding has been a significant problem on my commute to work on several occasions just during this summer. This video shows the intersection between King street and Line street this summer after a brief rainstorm. I believe it was only raining for under 30 minutes and there was extreme flooding. I'm more used to worrying about snow and ice. When I lived in Charleston over the summer, I had to educate myself about what areas flooded because I had a car down here. Fortunately, I live in an area that doesn't get flooded because of the high elevation. Unfortunately, I worked in an area that would get badly flooded with little rain. I typically would walk to work on days it would rain just because I was very concerned about my car. With my luck, my car would probably be the one to get flooded with water. One day it was so bad that the water was up to my knees. It is only 0.3 miles away from the Battery! I was always so excited when school was canceled. The Charleston peninsula is the worst area to flood in the city because it is surrounded by water all around.

I live on the Eastside and as you can see there’s not many cars on the street because mostly everybody left and just a few stayed including me. You can see it is not much but the wind was strong, there were some tree limbs and leaves blown around and it’s crazy because the hurricane hadn’t made landfall yet. I was just walking around my street recording before things got crazy. Where I live it doesn’t flood much even when it rains a lot but that day my street flooded. I know other parts on the Eastside were flooded pretty bad, it was a couple of days before people could drive or walk around. On my way home I  saw some water on the road but it didn't look deep. So I kept going because it was the only way I thought I could get home. 
As I kept going the water got deeper and deeper and it was no turning back. So I kept going in hops I can make it home with my pizza. 
My car begin to smoke and turned off. I got so nervous I did not know what to do, but I did know I needed to get out. So I turned the car back on and that was a mistake because my car then begin to fill up with nasty Charleston rain water. I called 911 and was instructed to climb out of the window and sit on top of roof of the car and wait for the fire department to show up. I live on Coming St. and it floods even at the smallest amount of rain. It's a new normal in my life to see Coming St. flooded. These flood tides at home are very predictable and the town prepares very well and make sure all residents are ready. We get a lot of rain but it never floods. I took this video from my job on Market St one day we had a lot of heavy rain. I knew that driving was not the best idea and especially not walking. I work on South Market st, so whenever it is high tide and raining, I am used to putting out sandbags to keep as much water out of the building as possible. This year I moved into a house, so this is the first time I have had to deal with this amount of flooding. My house is by Ashley Hall, and the roads tend to flood while also having a lot of traffic, causing there to be waves. I was on my way home from working in Kiawah and I could see this big dark, black cloud over downtown Charleston, knowing I was going to be driving into a storm, a bad one. Once I got to downtown I was on the 17 in downtown. Everyone was going at least 5 mph through the flooding, my car, a SUV, almost floating. I've never really experienced it at home because whenever it rains hard, all of the rain drains pretty quickly. When I first moved to Charleston, I noticed how even a little bit of rain could cause flooding. When Hurricane Ian hit, that was the most flooding I had ever seen. The streets were full of water and I lost power in my apartment. I actually just had a personal connection to flooding. During the hurricane, my hometown of Pawleys Island got affected. The water was up to the street signs and hoods of cars on the island. The pier was also extremely damaged. As you can see in the photos, the end of the pier became de-attached and destroyed. Luckily, the street I live on does not flood as much compared to the others around it. Hurricane Ian caused some intense flooding on these surrounding streets. Because of this, there are transportation restrictions, even after the water has drained. I grew up in Annapolis, Maryland which is a smaller version of Charleston. Downtown Annapolis is on the water and floods so easily. Since I went to school downtown it was always hard to attend school when it would flood. Coming to Charleston I was already used to the floods. So when hurricane Ian came I was ready and prepared. Flooding is a huge issue that needs to be focused on and fixed. Flooding and hurricanes have never really been scary for me. My house is located at the bottom of my neighborhood where the sewage drainage is not very strong. Every time it rains for at least an hour, we get some light flooding in front of my house. During hurricane season, the flooding can be much heavier, but since I know the area very well, I am able to still navigate my truck through some neighborhoods. I never drive my car through a flooded street that I have never driven through before.
