Summary of Building And Detonating the Atom Bomb in Nevada

My article was Building And Detonating the Atom Bomb in Nevada. It was about how scientist in the 1950's were testing bombs to understand the effects and fallout. I believe this because in the text it says," Scientists in Nevada took the crude nuclear weapons that had been dropped on Japan in 1945 during WWII and magnified their destructive power. Each new improvement was tested. About 100 of these tests, known as atmospheric shots, took place above ground." this evidence shows that multiple tests had taken place, with few altercations and adjustments just so they could understand the atomic bomb. Another reason why I believe that they tested the atomic bomb to understand it is because it says in the article that," In fact, nuclear explosions release dangerously high levels of radiation. This radiations is known as fallout. It can lead to all sorts of illnesses, in particular cancer." this portion was about how the scientist at the time didn’t know the risks of fallout and that is another reason why they were trying to figure out the atomic bomb. To know its effects on the land, people, and region. One last reason why I think that scientists were testing bombs to understand the effects and fallout is because it says in the page that, "each nuclear shot at the Nevada Test Site was a carefully planned exercise. Scientists wanted to understand how various new bomb designs would work." It states here that they were just trying to understand new bombs to know which was most effective and which ones weren't as effective.

Summary:

The central idea of the article is that when Barack Obama visited Hiroshima, it highlights how hard the U.S has worked to bring peace, and make up for past mistakes. One supporting detail is that the United States now has a peaceful relationship with Japan, and acknowledges the hardships the Japanese people had to endure. The U.S has made an agreement with the country of Japan, and Obama's visit showed that we continue to try to make peace. Another supporting detail is that America has played a big role in peace in Asia. This is shown through how the U.S has tried to improve our relationship with China and Russia. One last supporting detail is that officials from the U.S and Japan have worked for peace. Nobusuke Kishi, the grandfather of Japanese Prime minister Shinzo Abe, was one of those people who pushed for peace.

Summary:
Nuclear fission is the source of nuclear power. Nuclear fission is a way for energy to be generated and used for power. It is a process of splitting atoms. For example, "Nuclear Fission is the process of splitting a large atom into two or more smaller atoms". When this splitting occurs, a huge amount of energy is released. Used in thee correct way, the splitting could generate power. For starters, "When energy is released in slow controlled manner, it can be used to generate electricity." This is the process that gives us our nuclear energy. One last example is, "Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to generate heat + electricity." The process of nuclear fission is the key behind nuclear power. By releasing huge amounts if energy when atoms split, it generates the power plants that gives us our lights and TV.

The History of Atomic Bombs

Created during the second World War and mass produced, tested, and developed for the arms race in the Cold War, atomic bombs have had a big impact on history, along with a history of their own. The discovery that made these bombs possible was in 1938 in Berlin, Germany, when and where scientists Hahn, Meitner, and Strassman discovered nuclear fission. Nuclear fission was when "an atom of radioactive material splits into lighter atoms" causing a "sudden, powerful release of energy" (History.com, 3). During WWII, in fear that Germany was creating nuclear weapons, Americans made the Manhattan Project, where scientists worked on developing the first atomic bomb. The first two working atomic bombs that the Manhattan Project created were "Little Boy" and "Fat Man", bombs capable of murdering thousands of people instantly, both of which were dropped on Japan Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end WWII. Only after a few years following WWII, America was no longer the only country with atomic bombs because, though spying, the USSR obtained the blueprints for atomic bombs. During the Cold War, the world appeared to be on the brink of nuclear war to many people. During this time, it was discovered that nuclear "fallout" or the radiation created by atomic bombs caused cancer, which lead to many antinuclear movements to start up in America. In 1968 America and the Soviet Union took the lead in creating the NPT, which took effect in 1970. The NPT, or the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, requires that countries with nuclear weapons cannot use those weapon, must reduce their stockpiles of it, and not aid non-nuclear countries in obtaining nuclear weapons, along with requiring countries without nuclear weapons to not acquiring nuclear weapons of their own. Some countries who did sign the NPT, like North Korea, are ignoring these requirements and making nuclear weapons, along with some countries that never signed and want nuclear weapons of their own.

Central idea: Atomic bombs are dangerous weapons capable of destroying cities, feared yet yearned, throughout the world and time.

1) The bomb "Little boy" exploded Hiroshima with about 13 kilotons of force and killed about 80,000 people instantly

2) After the US and Soviet Union were able to create atomic bombs, many other world superpowers were creating, developing, and storing tens of thousands of nuclear weapons

3) in 1968, the US, Soviet Union, and some other countries created a treaty to try and lower usage and production of atomic weapons, along with stopping the spread of them to other countries.
