         <description><![CDATA[<p>The industry I have chosen to focus on is the healthcare industry. The healthcare system is something that is extremely important to me, as I am planning to pursue a career in medicine in the<a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://future.by"> future. By the time I become a PA, AI will have advanced far enough for me to also be able to incorporate it into my daily routine. I am interested in learning about what technologies are available now in various clinical settings, which have made the healthcare system run more smoothly and effectively. </a>Whether playing a vital part in the administrative role by organizing patient files and appointments, AI has also helped physicians diagnose certain diseases. In my padlet wall, I will delve deep into certain technologies within the healthcare system which have been created to make the lives of healthcare workers easier. I will be focusing on technologies that specifically have been created to help with the front desk/insurances, and also tools that have been used within patient rooms, which have made it easier for doctors to detect whether or not certain tumors are benign or malignant. Besides my career ambition, another reason why I was specifically interested in seeing how AI has grown in the healthcare industry, is because of its capability to change someone’s life. As an undergraduate, I always thought AI’s use was to mainly solve complex homework problems or help draft emails. However, learning that it could potentially save a patient's life was very fascinating to me.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Healthcare - AI in Diagnostic Imaging</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>A powerful AI tool which has greatly enhanced the healthcare system is iCAD's Profound Ai. This tool uses deep learning algorithms (artificial neural networks to analyze complex patterns), to examine a patient's mammogram results. It compared the results to a set dataset, informing the doctor if there are any areas of concern, such as whether or not cancer is present. Doctors have stated that this AI tool has made their lives easier in that it acts like a second pair of eyes and improves the accuracy of the radiologist's findings. Sometimes the radiologist cannot see something unusual with the naked eye, whereas the iCAD technology can. However, some limitations to this technology, like all other technologies, is that there are glitches. Sometimes, iCAD Ai would flag something they see suspicious, when nothing is actually going on. All in all, I do think this AI tool is beneficial for the healthcare system. In terms of being able to detect cancer, iCAD's profound AI might be able to detect cancer at an early stage, before the doctor is even able to see it, ultimately saving the patient's life. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Healthcare - AI Use In The OR</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The introduction of Johnson and Johnson's Polyphonic digital ecosystem has brought a major benefit for the lives of attendings and residents. This AI tool uses open and secure digital technology, which allows people to edit and use software services. In the case of the OR, this AI tool allows attendings to record themselves doing procedures in the OR, which they could then send to their residents to learn. This is a very efficient tool, allowing doctors to save a lot of time to teach residents, when all they can do is record a video of themselves and send a mass message to all the residents. However, with this system being relatively new, there are limitations. For example, there is limited availability, such as this technology is not accessible to all OR's yet because of how costly it is to record complex surgical procedures. In addition, to analyze large volumes of surgical data requires lots of time and money to process, reducing these collaborations between surgeons and residents. Overall, as time goes on, I do think this polyphonic system has a future in the hospital, allowing residents to learn at a faster rate, without having to ask each and every trivial detail to their attending during a procedure. </p>]]></description>

         <title>XG Boost Mode - AI in Healthcare Administration</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The creation of the XG Boost Mode, an AI decision making/machine learning algorithm, has greatly enhanced the administrative side of healthcare. The development of this AI technology has allowed staff working at the front desk to schedule patient appointment/files a lot faster. Instead of these workers, sitting at the front desk all day reminding patients of their appointments, XGBoost is trained to remind the patients. In addition to this, this AI technology is also able to document patient files. It specifically can scan documents, process relevant information, and then organize the patients file for the provider to find. However, there are some limitations to the XI Boost. For example, researchers have seen compatibility issue XG Boost is having with other software systems, meaning the system cannot be used universally. This AI tool is also seen to have limited performance, in that it is not able to process heavy workload. This can be an issue, especially when you are dealing with lots of patient information. All in all, the creation of the XG Boost definitely has a future in healthcare administration. After some improvements, it could definitely reduce the amount of front desk workers hired at hospitals/clinics. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Future Trends and Ethical Considerations</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>As stated before, AI has lots of potential in the healthcare field. Throughout the years, various AI technologies have developed, from helping healthcare providers diagnose patients to aiding administrative workers. As Cleveland Clinic's Chief Digital Officer Rohit Chandra says, "AI is no longer just an interesting idea, but is used in a real-life setting." Various physicians say that in the future AI will be able to produce high quality radiological images that were never even seen in the healthcare industry before. In addition, surgeons believe that because AI has the capability of already analyzing bone fractures and mammogram results, it will one day also have a future in assisting in surgical procedures. According to Cleveland Clinic, surgeons are working to improve complex AI predictive models, which will one day be able to guide medical/surgical epilepsy decision-making. On the other hand, apart from all the great stuff AI is doing for the healthcare field, we also need to take into account the ethics of these AI applications. Many of these new AI technologies, for example, are found in well-resourced healthcare areas, as these economically disadvantaged communities are not able to afford such advanced resources. This makes it hard for physicians to give high quality care to all their patients when they do not have the necessary technologies available to them. Overall, if we do see a future in AI, we need to make sure that we make these AI tools affordable for all types of communities, so healthcare remains affordable and accessible to all people, regardless of their gender, race, or economic status. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>With AI growing in the healthcare industry, we need to worry about its broader social impacts. As stated before, AI tools which improve diagnosis are not accessible to all parts of the world. We can find them in more developed areas compared to the underdeveloped rural areas. This disrupts the quality of care that providers can provide, as someone living in a more developed country is able to potentially get a more accurate diagnosis compared to an individual living in an underserved area. In addition, there are also issues with AI in maintaining patient privacy. With the large amounts of patient data that AI needs to process, these tools need to be better trained on how to follow HIPPA guidelines, as they are taking personal information from patients, such as home addresses and insurance information. Overall, one of the biggest reasons as to why hospitals/clinics are hesitant to incorporate AI into their healthcare system, is because of its cost. To have AI succeed in the healthcare industry, there needs to be an incorporation of big data analytic facilities in order to enhance things like patient diagnosis, health management, and a personalized treatment plan for the patient. These facilities can cost a fortune, however, without them, there is no guarantee that patient data is safe.  After doing research, it makes sense as to why cost is one of the biggest issues of expanding AI in the healthcare system. I do believe that the next focus is to try to continue to make these advanced AI tools but at a more appropriate cost. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I found the research process of the impact of AI in the healthcare industry to be very interesting. While doing my research, I first focused on researching how AI is focusing on healthcare holistically, and then specially focused on how specific tools have helped the administrative side of healthcare, in addition to the clinical side of healthcare. I knew that AI was growing in the healthcare industry, but this project allowed me to delve deeper into the specific technologies which are used for patient diagnosis, such as advanced mammogram technologies to determine if a patient has cancer. However the biggest challenge that I had with this project was finding AI different technologies that did a variety of different things within the healthcare industry. Lots of the technologies I found were involved in patient diagnosis, and I did find it difficult to find tools that were beneficial to other areas of the healthcare industry, and therefore I could only focus on the clinical/administrative side of the industry. It was also difficult to find credible sources to get my information from, hence I used the Stony Brook database to get my sources.&nbsp; All in all, this project opened my eyes to the growth of AI in healthcare and gives me hope that AI will advance by the time I start practicing medicine.&nbsp;</p>]]></description>
