This flower is hidden deep into the forest and is kept a secret by Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel keeps this flower a secret because she has used it to keep herself young for hundreds of years. As Mother Gothel is paying a visit to the flower, she hears guards getting closer and puts a fake bush over the plant attempting to hide it. In a rush she accidentally knocks over the bush with her cape and exposes where the flower is. The guards find it and de-root it, to take back to the Queen. This upsets Mother Gothel so she creates a plan in order to get some of the flowers magic. After putting the flower in a broth for the Queen to drink, she gives birth to a baby girl with long blonde hair, Rapunzel. Later in the night Mother Gothel sneaks into the King and Queens room in order to cut a strand of Rapunzel's hair. The magic in the strand dies, so she resorts to kidnapping her. The Queen and King wake up in terror, as their daughter is being kidnapped by Mother Gothel. Ever since that day, the Queen and King light up floating lights on her birthday, in hope they will find their daughter. Mother Gothel is devoted to keeping Rapunzel a secret so she can stay young forever. She hides Rapunzel in a hidden tower and does not allow her to leave. Rapunzel is raised in the tower, and grew the passion for art. On the day before Rapunzel's 18th birthday she builds up the courage to ask her mother, if she could go see the floating lights in person. Mother Gothel is annoyed by the idea of Rapunzel leaving the tower and gaslights her by trying to convince her that the floating lights are just stars. Rapunzel explains to her that she has charted the stars and know that those are not stars because they only appear on her birthday. Mother Gothel then exaggerates the dangers of the outside world in hope Rapunzel stops asking to leave.  Mother Gothel goes on another trip and leaves the tower. After she's left, Flynn Ryder climbs up the tower after accidentally stumbling upon it due to being chased by the guards for steal the crown. Rapunzel gets scared and hits him in the back of his head and shoves him in her closet. Mother Gothel returns and asks Rapunzel if she would like anything else for her birthday. Rapunzel asks for paints far away from the tower, and Mother Gothel agrees to take the 3 day  trip to get her paints. After she leaves, Rapunzel takes Flynn out of the closet, ties him up to a chair with her hair and hides his bag. Once Flynn regains consciousness, he attempts to woo Rapunzel with his pretty boy face but fails. Rapunzel makes a deal, that if he takes her to see the floating lights she would return his satchel. At first Flynn doesnt agree because of his bounty, but after Rapunzel explains that she wont return his satchel unless he takes her, he finally agrees. She gets nervous and feels bad for "breaking her mothers heart". She goes through mood swings in which she does not regret her decision and where she does. Flynn tries to comfort her by saying a little rebellion is healthy, even if its going to "break her heart and crush her soul". Flynn then tries to return Rapunzel to the tower, but Rapunzel refuses to return and is determined to see the floating lights. During this, Mother Gothel stumbles upon a guard horse by the name of Maximus, and instantly gets worried about Rapunzel and returns in a rush to the tower. She attempts to calls out for Rapunzel but shes not letting her hair down. Mother Gothel searches the entire tower for Rapunzel but finds out she is missing. While looking around the glimmer of the princess crown shines into her eye. One of the thugs recognizes Flynn and notices he has a bounty on him so charges out to find a guard. The thugs fight over Flynn while Rapunzel is begging them to let go of him. Rapunzel then helps the thugs open up about their dreams and what they've wanted to do. One thug wanted to be a pianist, another a mime, an interior designer. Rapunzel shares with them her journey of wanting to see the floating lights. While Mother Gothel is making way on her trip she stumbles upon the restaurant that Rapunzel is at, and figures out she left the tower. The thugs warm up to Rapunzel and cheer her on as she sings. While the two are creating small talk, the ground starts shaking and they realize they are being chased at by the guards. They run out of the cave and realize that they are at a water mill. There's only two exits and one gets blocked by two thugs Flynn betrayed earlier. Rapunzel hands Flynn her pan and she swings onto the other side of the mill with her hair. Flynn defeats all the guards with the pan but gets it knocked out of his hand by Maximus. Luckily, Rapunzel is able to get a grip on Flynn's hand with her hair and she is able to fling him towards her. In an attempt to reach Rapunzel, Maximus knocks down a pillar that is holding up another set of pillars. Flynn is holding one end of Rapunzel's hair and tells her to jump in order to get away from Maximus. Flynn tries to find an exist to the cave but cannot because its too dark. While trying to move rocks he cuts his hand. Rapunzel realizes that they might die and starts regretting ever leaving the tower. Rapunzel starts apologizing to Flynn for putting him in this situation, then he reveals that his real name is Eugene Fitzhurbert. Rapunzel then tell him the secret her hair glows when she sings. She then realizes she can use her hair to guide them out of the cave. She begins to sing but is cut off by the rising water, luckily the hair begins to glow. In shock Eugene gasps underwater but covers his mouth in order to not lose air. After they escape they get out of a lake and begin to dry off. During this Mother Gothel meets with the two thugs that Eugene betrayed, and overhears their conversation about wanting revenge on Eugene. Mother Gothel hands them the crown and tells them about a plan that includes revenge on Eugene.

Rapunzel then explains to Eugene why she had never left the tower, and what happens to her hair if cut. Eugene then begins to trust Rapunzel and tells her his backstory. Eugene was an orphan with nothing, he would read stories about Flynnigan Ryder. He explains to Rapunzel, how Flynnigan Ryder was the richest man and could go anywhere he wanted to go. Eugene really looked up to him because he had nothing, he dreamt of having everything. He then asks Rapunzel not to tell anyone anything about what he said. After walking away to get more firewood, Mother Gothel reveals herself from the shadows and tells Rapunzel that they are going home. Mother Gothel then tells Rapunzel that Eugene is only sticking around because he wants the crown. The next day, Eugene is woken up by Maximus. Maximus begins to drag him away but Rapunzel tames him. They make a deal that Maximus doesnt get Eugene arrested for 24 hours and then they can chase each other again. Once they arrive at the kingdom, Eugene notices Rapunzel is struggling to keep her hair together so he gets a group of girls to braid her hair. The King and Queen then light the first lantern, and then the rest of the kingdom lights their lanterns. While Rapunzel is gazing at the lights above Eugene hands her a lantern to push up into the sky. Rapunzel starts thanking Eugene and hands him the bag with the crown. They begin to sing and admire each other. They want Rapunzel, they knock him out and tie him to a boat to give the illusion that he's driving away. As the thugs approach Rapunzel, Mother Gothel knocks them out and goes in to hug Rapunzel. She reminds her that Eugene only wanted the crown. In tears Rapunzel goes in to hug her mother and they return to the tower. When Eugene's boat the guards find him and arrest him. Meanwhile in the tower Mother Gothel is unbraiding Rapunzel's hair. Then the guards begin to take Eugene to get hanged as a punishment. Rapunzel grabs the cloth with the sun that Eugene bought her and she starts to notice how many of those suns are in her room. On the way to get hanged Eugene finds out that Mother Gothel ratted our Rapunzel to the two thugs. In the tower Rapunzel realizes she is the lost princess and Mother Gothel tries to gaslight her again and tell her shes crazy. As Eugene is resisting going to the hanging place the thugs from the restaurant are there to save him. He gets on Maximus and rides to Rapunzels tower. He climbs up only to see Rapunzel tied up. When he steps in he gets stabbed my Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel continues to drag Rapunzel into the basement of the tower, but she resists and asks her to let her heal him and she'll obey her orders. As Rapunzel gets to him he cuts all her hair off and her magic is gone. Mother Gothel begins to rapidly age into an old witch, horrified by her looks she covers herself with her cloak but trips and falls out of the tower and dies. Rapunzel begins to cry over Eugenes body.
