Alexander Pechersky was born on February 22, 1909.

His unit was captured during the Battle of Moscow and imprisoned sometime in October, 1941.

After years of harsh labor, he was sent off to the Sobibor Extermination Camp on September 18, 1943.

After being sent off to camp, Pechersky led an uprising in the camp, escaping in the woods On October 14, 1943.

After the war, he survived and returned to the Soviet Union where he was imprisoned in a gulag, when after the death of Joseph Stalin, he was released in in 1953 and sadly passed away on January 19, 1990.

Alexander Pechersky: Act of Resistance

A group of Polish Jews led by Leon Feldhendler formed a secret committee to plan a mass escape. However, its members lacked any military experience and made little progress.

When a group of Jewish Red Army POWs (prisoners of war) arrived in a transport from Minsk in September, the committee turned to them for advice. Within three weeks, Lieutenant Alexander Pechersky worked out a detailed plan. First, the Soviet POWS would secretly kill some of the SS officials, taking their weapons and uniforms. Then, when the approximately 600 prisoners assembled for evening roll call, the POWs masquerading as camp personnel would kill the guards at the gate and on the towers and urge the prisoners to flee. The revolt was set for a day when the Sobibor commandant and several of its leading officials would be away.
