As an artistic movement strongest in France, the occupation of the country by the Nazis meant that most of its practitioners fled the continent, many of the Surrealists going the United States. In addition after the war other movements emerged that superseded Surrealism in critical attention, including Abstract Expressionism and later Pop Art, etc.

    Surrealism didn't really die.  Artists like Max Ernst, Juan Miro, Salvador Dali and others were active through the 1970s and 1980s. 

    Surrealism ended in 1910
