Bonus Mom! : Taking the Step Out of Mom

Author: Tami Butcher
Description: This book is about the child's perspective of a step parent. The author explores the different feelings that go along with having a step parent and then gives a positive perspective about some of the joys that can come with having a step parent.

How is it Transformative?
- This book is transformative because it goes against the dominant norm of having a nuclear family with a biological mom and dad. Instead this book shows how having a step parent can be and how positive it can be for the kids. Most of the time books tend to show the nuclear family when in reality there are many families that operate very different from that. This gives students with different family backgrounds and make ups a chance to relate to a book and see themselves through it.

Author: Karamo Brown & Jason "Rachel" Brown
Description: This book is about a parent /child relationship and all of the positives that are associated. Parenting and the bond between a parent and their child is one that is very strong. The illustrations show multiple parent/ child combinations and the story told through two perspectives, one of the child and one of the parent.

How is it Transformative?
-This book is transformative because it does not focus on the typical mom and dad household. Instead it shows a father and his child remembering all the great milestones that comes with growing up. The illustrations show same sex couples and more that go against the dominant norms.

Author: Rebecca Cobb
Description: This story is all about a father helping a child cope with losing their mother. The child goes through numerous feelings as to why he has go through this. His father helps him find different ways to help his child get through this terrible time.

How is it Transformative?
- This book explores feeling of sadness and while focusing on the loss of a parent. The child in the book wonders why the other kids have their mommy. As one can see, this book covers a subject that most kids should never have to go through. But, it confronts the norm of having two parents in the home and gives a look into a single dad parenting lifestyle. Although this book is sad, it does provide a way for students with a single parent, to relate and make connections with the text because of their funds of knowledge.

Author: Margot Lee Shetterly
Description: This book covers the successes of four African American women that made amazing contributions to NASA. The book explores how the women overcame racial barriers and became major influencers in the space missions. These women's stories were not always given the praise they deserve because of their race and gender.

How is it Transformative?
-This book is transformative because it confronts the dominant norm of white men being mathematicians for NASA. Instead of hearing about a white man given credit for a NASA space mission. Finally, African American women are given credit. This flips the norm that is evident in many areas of life where there is tendency for our society to value men over women.

Mama's Nightingale: A Story of Immigration and Separation

Author: Edwidge Danticat
Description: This book tells the story of a young girl named Saya that mother is sent to an immigration detention center. She misses her mom very dearly and listens to cassette tapes of her mother speaking to her and sharing culture with her as she is away in the detention facility. Saya begins her own mission to bring her mother home.

How is it Transformative?
- This book is transformative because it confronts immigration and all the heartache and devastation that comes with possible separation during the process. Many do not understand what people who immigrate to America go through and this book illuminates the extent to which these people struggle and the lives at which are treated poorly through immigration. The power of family and culture is also reflected in this book and would be relatable for students that have parents that are being held similarly to Saya's mother.

Parker Looks Up: An Extraordinary Moment

Author: Parker Curry & Jessica Curry
Description: This book is all about a young girl and her mother visiting a museum. Jessica, the young girl, sees many different famous people in the museum but one woman catches her eye. Michelle Obama captured her attention like no other and she suddenly feels that she can accomplish all of her dreams no matter what her racial identity or gender identity is.

How is it Transformative?
- This book is transformative because it shows a young African American girl seeing a strong role model that is also African American. Often times, African Americans are not reflected in books and especially not as a strong role model for kids to look up to. This confronts the usual norms of a white male role model and instead provides a black woman that students can look up to. I appreciate how this book goes against dominant racial and gender identity norms.

Author: Ashley Franklin
Description: This book explores the experiences fo a young girl who tries out for the Snow White musical at her school but all the kids are making fun of her because she doesn't quite "look" like Snow White because Tameika is African American and does not fit the stereotype. However, this does not stop her quest in becoming the next Snow White.

How is this Transformative?
- This story is transformative because it confronts the dominant norm of having a white princess that has been depicted in so many child films and literature. Students at the school, are too, feeding into the stereotype and this young girl still chases her dreams regardless of the color of her skin or her racial identity. The book also confronts body image stereotypes.

Author: Frank Murphy
Description: This book encourages boys to be whatever they want them to be and not just the specific mold that the world often creates. The story encourages boys to embrace who they really are and not just think they have to become emotionless or a major sports player.

How is it Transformative?
- This story is transformative because it does confronts boy gender specific norms and instead shows boys that they can do things like gardening and listening to other people stories. It makes boys realize that the "boy" that is typically depicted in society is not a mold that they have to fit into.

Each of the skin tones are described as unique and that they are all individuals. The book shows how people of all skin tones can get along and be friends.

How is it Transformative?
- This book is transformative because it represents a racial group that is often oppressed in society and in many forms of literature. It shows how there is not just one shade of being "black" it is really very diverse even inside a racial group.

The girl grows to love her hair and all that comes with it. It celebrates African American hair and how beautiful it is.

How is it Transformative?
- This book is transformative because it confronts the dominant norm of having straight hair as being the acceptable hair type. Instead it shows how lovely other hair types can be and how each is beautiful. In this case it confronts racial norms because it shows how African Americans can have pretty hair too which I think is often forgotten and people with straight hair are often seen as having the best hair.
