(Transcript)

Many characters in The Outsiders, other than Ponyboy and Johnny, also had to deal with serious topic in their lives. Cherry Valance had to deal with the death of her boyfriend, Bob, who she stated that she loved a lot. Dally had an abusive family, grew up in a very bad place, had been in jail multiple times, was suicidal, and witnessed the death of his very best friend, Johnny. Ponyboy and his brothers had to cope with the deaths of their parents, who they were very close to. Sodapop had to drop out of school to help sustain his family, and Darry also had to quit his education in order to help his family be stable.

[How does S. E. Hinton develop the theme through setting, characters, and plot over the course of the text?]

S.E. Hinton develops the theme of "The Outsiders" through the setting, characters, and plot. The theme of the book is "Loss of Innocence" and the characters in the book face traumas and serious matters which helps develop this. The characters live in a very harsh environment which has common fights, many of the residents have dark pasts, there is a strong rivalry among the classes, and many of the children are in abusive environments and/or are very poor. These conditions do not make it a very good place to grow up in and it causes a lot of the people to have lost their innocent view of the world early on. The plot of the book is that there is a rivalry between two social groups which ends in a murder. The subject of murder and the extreme rivalry between the social classes leads to strong topics that the characters must deal with. For example, when Johnny gets jumped by the Socs, he is traumatized by it for the rest of his life. The plot of the story, setting of the characters' lives, and the characters' pasts all help develop the theme of "Loss of Innocence" in the bok "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton.

Page: 50-51
In the Text: Ponyboy and Darry get into a serious fight and Darry hits Ponyboy. Ponyboy gets upset and runs away from home with Johnny.
Relation to Theme: This relates to the theme "Loss of Innocence" because Darry hitting Ponyboy makes him distrust his family, mostly his oldest brother. Many "innocent" people don't have much exposure to serious topics like abuse and family issues

They run away to avoid getting caught by the police and go to dally for help.
Relation to Theme: Ponyboy is now an accomplice to the murder of Bob the soc. Murder and death can be a traumatizing event and proves to be for Ponyboy when he repeats "This can't be happening. This can't be happening. This can't be..." (page 57)
