In less than a year, I had the opportunity to be published as a WCAPS Young Ambassador and to be an editor for the latest WCAPS publication, "A New Normal." Both of these experiences have been amazing, and I never thought I'd get to do the latter so early in my career.

My role was that of author and workshop participant. My experience has been extremely positive. I am so fortunate to be a WCAPS member. The people I have met through WCAPS have been supportive and encouraged me in my interests in cybersecurity, immigration, policy, and finance.  I am also fortunate to be able to mentor, and receive mentorship. My mentor encouraged me to write the policy paper when I doubted myself.  WCAPS is a network where we can come together in a safe space to grow professionally. I have served as a Final editor, Contributor and Write-Shop instructor.  The reason I started the WCAPS publications is to give a voice to women of color whose voices are left out of discussions since there are not many opportunities to publish. We have now had several such publications and from I see are organizations coming to me looking for WOC who can publish, and the WCAPS authors of these publications now publishing in other publications now. Once again, what was needed was an opportunity that was not there before. Once that door is open, then people can see how much girls and women of color have to add to these conversations.

It was incredibly rewarding to serve as an Editor for the Intersectionality of National Security Sub-Working Group's publication project "A New Normal: Redefining National Security beyond 2020." As an Editor, I had the opportunity to engage with WCAPS members who have a range of backgrounds and expertise - from human trafficking to global health to nuclear security. Our team's goals were to promote and highlight the voices of Women of Color in these fields.

I was a Contributor to the WCAPS Climate Change policy portfolio in 2020. I have served as an Instructor and Participant.  In writing, there is an inherent bias against women and young people. Further, language standards are often tied to Whiteness, and they produce “political, cultural, linguistic, and economic dominance for White people” (Inoue, 2019, p. 8). Do not be afraid to be successful. Do not be afraid to fail. When we shine and stand unashamed, we encourage others to do the same.

This was a great way to engage with a group of people and think out ideas. The hardest word to put down is the first word. The editors were friendly and helpful. A great way to get started when transitioning from wordy academic to brief policy.

I co-authored an article for a WCAPS publication. WCAPS provided me with a supportive network and forum to bring my perspective and expertise into a process that would create new knowledge and drive policy effectively. They went above and beyond to ensure a diverse set of voices could be heard and our presence felt in the national security space.

Thanks to WCAPS, I was provided a platform to publish my thoughts and ideas within WCAPS publications and beyond! Recently I published a piece in Outrider Post, in a partnership between Outrider Foundation and WCAPS, on the topic of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the national security pipeline. I recognize WCAPS has created space for women of color to share their voices, including in written pieces, and has set a new precedent encouraging other organizations in the security field to check whether diversity and inclusion is reflected in their publications.
