Time for the Tundra! by Matthew Klausner

The tundra is a unique biome that is found between 60 and 90 degrees north latitudes. The tundra is the coldest biome in the world! Very few species are able to survive here. Many people believe that the driest parts of the Earth also are the warmest. This is not the case. The Artic Tundra receives only 15 to 25 cm of precipitation annually. Of course, this precipitation is mostly found in the form of snow.

The Tundra is the coldest and northern-most biome in the biosphere. The temperature range for this ecosystem is typically between -40 degrees Celsius and 18 degrees Celsius. The temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius for six to 10 months of the year in the tundra!
The tundra is a relatively dry biome, receiving only 15 to 25 centimeters of precipitation per year. Due to the cold climate in this biome, most of the precipiation is in the form of snow. This snow covers the ground and freezes, called the permafrost, shortening the tundra's growing season. This is because the ice that is formed needs to thaw before fruits and vegetables can be planted.
Sunlight is scarce in the tundra. During the winter, the sun is not present here, and in the summer, the sun hangs rather low in the sky. Due to this lack of radiant energy from the sun, producers are scarce in the tundra, for they need sunlight to go through photosynthesis.

Because of its harsh climate, the tundra is the home of only about 1,700 species. Producers are scarce, but the producers that are present have special adaptions that allow them to survive the cold in this region. Most plants, the dwarf shrub, for example, grow extremely low to the ground to preserve warmth. These plants typically are a dark color so that they can absorb more of the sun's heat. A lot of the plants that live in the tundra are evergreen, so they can go through photosynthesis earlier than regular plants. Some, but not all, plants are covered in a thin layer of fur to remain warm.
Animals that do not have special adaptations to survive the cold will typically hibernate or migrate in the tundra. However, some animals, musk oxen, for instance, have a thick layer of fur to keep them warm. Musk oxen grow a second fur coat during the winter so that they can survive the harsh temperatures of the tundra. Some animals in the tundra, typically prey, use camouflage to avoid being attacked by predators like arctic foxes, brown bears, and snowy owls. For example, the snow rabbit's fur changes from a white color in the winter to blend in with the snow . In the summer, the fur on these creatures becomes brown.
Below is a picture of the dwarf shrub found in the tundra. As you can see, the plants have a layer of frozen snow covering them. These plants are also extremely close to the ground, an adaptation that keeps them warm.
https://www.eol.ucar.edu/projects/atlas/seward_cd/group/VEG/Walker/pdf_images.htm

The estimated productivity of the tundra is, as you may be able to guess, extremely low. This is because the number of producers in the biome is very low due to the lack of sunlight, harsh weather conditions, and layer of frozen snow on the ground. Because there are so few producers, the number of consumers in the tundra is even smaller. The energy fixation rate for the tundra is only about 0.5 x 10 to the third power kilocalories per square meter per year.
