The Delano Grape Strike

In 1962, Dolores Huerta (an American Labor Leader and activist whose work on behalf of migrant farm workers led to the establishment of The United Farm Workers of America) and Cesar Chavez (Labor leader and and farmworker advocate who devoted his life to improving the treatment of workers) held a Delano Grape strike from 1965-1970. Grape workers walked out and went on strike against grape growers in Delano,California to protest years of poor conditions and payment. Millions of Americans refused to buy them and finally in 1970, the grape growers agreed to sign the contracts, but it continued for another three years. Chavez said “The fight is never about grapes or lettuce. It is always about people.” Which means that the Delano grape strike was about people not the food and the reason they started the strike was because of how poor they are treated and they wanted more pay and better conditions.
