Most of the GIS is on land and environment side rather than on the social issues

Work most relevant to the discussion today: draw a lot on nature space – agricultural space with the topic of this study – primary challenges is that you can’t see it directly from space

Sources: Satellite – most of the data, then you can model and map which is global, survey based data – the challenge is data collection, time and effort – they might not have collected that you care about, third source – is crowd-sourced data – e.g. application, famous one in the nature space called iNaturalist, other volunteers can identify this and that it can model where these species are occurring and model certainty

Specific program work – agricultural supply chain, hard to track the things they’re buying all the way to the source, to look at GIS data in order to get a best estimate of whats possible, if you can track things down – you can go talk to the farmer

- Coming from a different perspective – academic and research

- Gender equity in development initiative

o Big portfolio within aiddata, in particularly working on restrospective evaluations – we notice a real opportunity to use GIS data and issues on women’s

o Men typically only answer household surveys

o They went to Northern Ghana to survey couples who make agricultural decisions on their plots

o Compare their answers, from literature we know that couples usually strongly disagree

o E.g. in Mexico 74% couldn’t agree on whether the household had a refrigerator

o Looking at bias specifically

o Agriculture activities were taking place

o Significant bias – men overreporting number of plots, reporting shorter distances from household

o To help provide solutions to these challenges – increasing awareness

o Working on a retrospective evaluation in Nepal, looking at evaluation of mobile farming app – utilising self-collected gIS data – to remotely record yields between 2 different groups that specifically target women.

o Overall this is how we can show and highlight how GIS can be used and what it brings to the table

o Or if its looking to do a retrospective evaluation, but certainly could be useful – if theres a desire to add to these questions, GIS can be added

o GIS can be used to complement traditional data methods

o Especially where women might be more difficult to survey – maybe we answer slightly different questions, but can answer questions for women more generally.
