Ball race: a learning story

This afternoon, Daniel was playing with golf balls, twirling one ball to hit another one. He called the educator, Sara, to play with him. He proposed another game in which each player twirled one ball and checked which ball arrived first. Sara engaged Daniel and invited him to create some lanes with loose parts. She put up a big wooden block and asked him to find something to use as a lane. Rapidly, he found some wooden gutters and laid one side on the block and the other on the floor, creating a ramp. In the part that touches the floor, he puts some plastic to make a tunnel. He put one golf ball on top of the ramp and watched how the ball went down. He was so excited that he started to create other ramps and tunnels. He put three ramps side by side and started several experiments. First, he throws three balls simultaneously, one on each ramp. He then discovered the other two balls, so he said, “We need one more ramp for this one!” and created one more lane. However, with five balls, he can’t throw them at the same time, so he asks Sara to help by throwing one and for me (Amanda) to throw the other two.

Daniel was radiant and extremely curious about these experiments. So he started to build ramps of different sizes to see how the balls behaved. He even added a cart to slide along with balls. So much fun!

We will also instill problem-solving skills through open-minded questions like, "What do you think will happen if you change the angle of the ramp?” Or, "How can you make the ball go faster?”
