Chris- In the future that is being shown to us, people are starting to settle on Mars. As different characters struggle with their own desires, fears, and the mysteries of the Martian landscape, the story chronicles their experiences. Themes of colonization, loneliness, and the frailty of human society arise via interactions with Martians and the difficulties of adjusting to a new environment.

Question: Would you be brave enough to travel to Mars?

Connor: Personally, I would not. It would be very frightening, challenging, and different than my life. I am the type of person who likes to stay true to his schedule and do things that make me feel comfortable. This would be too much out of my comfort zone. Not to mention, it would be very dangerous and I would not be willing to take that risk.

Question: Why do you think the humans destroyed the Martian Civilization?

Connor: I believe this is due to a magnitude of reasons. First, the humans do not understand the Martian culture and ways of doing things. They don’t understand their actions and what they’re doing. Secondly, it seems as if the humans are arrogant. They believe that they are superior which is not the case. Lastly, the humans and our society is much more advanced. Therefore, it would be difficult for the martians to combat this.

Question: Do you believe greed is a factor?

Connor: Yes, I do believe that greed is a factor. It seems that the humans are used to getting their way. They are not satisfied and want more power.

What was the Martian population mostly wiped out by?

Connor: The population was mostly wiped out by chickenpox. It must’ve come from previous expeditions where people have visited.

What was the general reaction to the Martian population falling apart? What would your reaction be?

The general reaction was mixed. Some people were un phased, but others were very upset. Some people rebelled on their own members to try to save the last few Martians. In my opinion, I would try to save them as well. It is very upsetting to see people or creatures die. You never want anyone to lose their life.

Chris: Ray Bradbury explores issues of cultural alienation and the yearning for home as he goes deeper into the human colonization of Mars in "The Martian Chronicles," pages 63–104. The eerie reminders of the effects of human expansion and the transience of existence are provided by the remains of the Martian society. Bradbury creates a striking portrait of the complexity of human nature and the universal need for belonging through a series of interconnected stories.

What was the reasoning for early settling on Mars?

Connor: Many settlers came to Mars for better opportunities. They wanted to seek adventure, get rid of the troubled earth, and search the unknown. Essentially, it was a fresh start to life.
