The mechanism of formation of limestone caves:

1. Rain water in the form of an acid solution dissolves as a result of dissolving carbon dioxide in hydrogen according to the following two equations:

H2CO3 (aq) + CaCO3 (s) → Ca (HCO3) 2

The Blue Grotto Cave , is a waterlogged sea cave located in a small bay called Balun, on the east side of the island of Bisevo .The grotto is one of the best known natural beauty spots on the Adriatic and a popular show cave because of the glowing blue light that appears at certain times of day.

The cave was formed by the wave action of the sea, as sea water eroded the limestone rock of which the whole island of Bisevo is composed. The cave is 60 meters long and 25 meters wide. The entry is two meters wide and roughly one meter high at low tide, making safe access possible only when tides are low and the sea is calm. To enter the grotto, visitors must lie flat on the bottom of a small four-person rowboat. The oarsman then uses a metal chain attached to the cave walls to guide the boat inside the grotto.
