A few of the biggest take aways from the chapter resources is as graduate students, and future counselors, we must acknowledge and address our own emotional and physical wellness. It is when we start to neglect our needs, we start to experience burnout, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue.

Self-Care is crucial in the helping profession for several reasons. If we are feeling depleted, feeling worn down and burnt out, it will start to affect the work with our clients as well as how effective we are with our clients. Self-Care can also increase our self-awareness and therefore help us empathize with our clients.

Personal Self-Care Strategies:

In order to practice self-care I have committed to several strategies this semester. I will regularly self monitor and notice when I am needing a self-care break. I have my students regularly do this in my classroom. I have also committed to better manage my time and keep myself on a schedule. I have started doing this by ensuring I get all of my classroom lesson plans and tasks done on Friday's, to leave time on the weekends to complete my coursework. I will also continue to go to the gym at least 2-3 times a week. Although I never feel like going, I always feel both less stressed and more energized after completing a workout.
