In my neighborhood, we have homeless camps at the post office, at every park and anywhere that a building is abandoned. It smells horrible, and people should not have to live like this. And, the environment is suffering under the weight of all the plastic and trash that is piled around the tents. I notice that it is usually men, and wonder what happened to them, and why we don't have a space for them to go - just something like a single room hotel situation where they would have a bathroom and a bed and a space to get mail. I know that the city of San Diego is building a lot of single room condos, but these folks need cheap rentals or a halfway house to get out of homelessness. What do you think of the idea of conservatorship?

the drop out rate in american high schools alone is staggering. the whole no child left behind thing has never been a real thing. what happens to the kids that slip between the cracks? that fall into a school to prison pipeline because they don't fit in. that get harassed or bullied daily because of their skin color, religous beliefs, health issues, or sexual orientation or whatever? the policy to protect these kids is virtually non existent and where it does exist it is often completely vague and ineffective in dealing with anything at all. i believe radical change needs to be mad to educational policy to protect minorities and misfits and have alternatives besides total alienation and exile. my year long studio thesis work, if is any good when i present it in a couple weeks will show novel ways of taking care of the most vulnerable of us besides sweeping them under the rug.
-jayli
