No rushing them to find the answer in 20 minutes, letting people take time, take a breathe

Also not letting them leave/run away when they get to issues they want to share but sometimes feel they can't

Helping people find their own links to their problems and then looking at the positive & negatives of the different solution, using 'Pros and Cons' node link mapping

making the right noises, nodding of the head, leaning of the head towards them

Body position, slight angle to facing them

Showing that you are giving them time for themselves

Its not just about using drug/alcohol last night, its the 'run' up prior to this, could be hours or could be days, what led up to their use/issue?

Asking - When - Where - Why -Who??

Using a time line prior to their issue

Paraphrasing what they have said so that you're 100% certain you have their story correct and not piecing together fragments and filling in the blanks

Identifying the time they wanted to leave, and managing this so they don't leave unprotected

Giving them time to express and also time for silence

Showing them that their issue is important to them but also that we know this and that its important to us too
