Recognizing the significance of the Lawa Model, Chevron and SEAOHUN collaborated with TDRC to develop the Lawa Model Online Course. This online training program, launched in April 2023, aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to apply the One Health approach in solving complex health problems. The course received an overwhelming response, attracting 234 participants from 40 countries across various disciplines. Ultimately, 114 participants successfully completed the course, and 23 exceptional individuals were chosen for the Lawa Model Field Trip held in Khon Kaen, Thailand, 31 May to 2 June 2023.

The shift from domination to partnering challenges us to learn to listen deeply and to move away from debate and into genuine and generative dialogue. For further information on how this has been explored as a way of transforming human-equine relations please see:

This shift into partnering is not easy to foster, such is the ubiquity of the domination system. Fostering the shift is, arguably, confounded by the failure of our educational systems to promote vertical literacy at the level of the individual and the group. One way to address this is to promote trauma literacy and trauma informed practice. Sadly, however, many of our organisations are trauma organised. The shift to becoming trauma informed is an essential step if we are to cease being trauma organised and realise the rich potential of healing organisations, who genuinely understand how trauma integration contributes to healing and to relational health.

MCM students are passionate problems solvers, by nature. They are action-oriented individuals trained to investigate problems beyond STEM disciplines integrating political, social, cultural, economic and other factors to help solve global health issues.

Students enter the MCM program with unique experiences, passions, and perspectives. They network amongst each other, faculty and guest lecturers to motivate each other, learn from one another other, share thoughts and viewpoints, and tackle problems.

Through small group learning, individual mentoring, capstone project work and hands-on externship experiences, MCM students gain practical knowledge to address complex issues affecting our world today.

In the MS in Conservation Medicine program, students will:

• Collaborate with an impressive network of experts and instructors.

• Apply their own expertise, skills, and interests to a year-long, self-directed Case Study Project

• Immerse themselves in a four-week "real-world" conservation medicine externship.

The program uses the One Health paradigm to approach health problems involving humans, animals and the rapidly changing environments we share.

Trainees complete the requirements for the MS in Environmental Health Sciences with an Area of Emphasis in One Health in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences or MPH in Epidemiology in the UW Department of Epidemiology and take supplemental coursework in zoonotic infectious disease, ergonomics and safety principles. Students receive tuition and stipend as scholars of the program, as well as have opportunity to get travel funds to attend/present at conferences.

These cases are designed to be used in the clinical phase of training for medical professionals, since they focus on clinical competencies regarding the impact of environmental change on the patient care setting and the role of clinicians in detecting and managing the impacts of those changes on their patients.

On a global level, it is apparent that some of the most severe impacts of climate change and other environmental change are occurring in vulnerable populations and low- and middle-income countries. For this reason, while some of the cases are set in the United States or Europe, many of them are based in a low-resource setting and were developed with input from healthcare providers across multiple countries.

Our Roadmap to Success

There is growing evidence and awareness of the benefits that healthy ecosystems provide to the health and well-being of our communities. Yet the challenges we face include:

• Intensifying climate change impacts

• Increasing prevalence of physical and mental health issues

• There is unequal access to the availability of good quality Greenspaces

• We continue to see loss and degradation of greenspaces’ natural features and functions

• Public policy to address these challenges is limited

   Community engagement emerges as a consistent and crucial theme. The emphasis is on actively involving communities as contributors rather than mere beneficiaries. This inclusive approach extends to policy statements, creative endeavours, and the development of sustainable initiatives.

   The sessions highlight the intersectionality of ecohealth with various disciplines. This promotes a nuanced understanding of issues as diverse perspectives, ranging from environmental communication and bioindicators to mental, physical and animal health and academic research, contribute to a holistic approach.

5. Ethical Considerations and Departure from Eurocentrism:

   Participants stress the importance of ethical considerations, responsible approaches, and a departure from Eurocentric models. This theme reflects a commitment to cultural sensitivity, knowledge inclusivity, and a recognition that global solutions must align with local contexts.

6. Challenges and Long-Term Thinking:

   Addressing challenges such as the Eurocentric nature of projects, time-bound impacts, and questioning the motivation behind development efforts is a consistent focus. There's a shared call for long-term thinking, ethical practices, and a shift toward mutual respect.

7. Collective Action and Collaboration:

   A unified call for collective action and collaboration echoes throughout the sessions. Participants emphasize the importance of operating as a movement rather than isolated projects. This shared responsibility is deemed crucial for building a healthier, just, and sustainable future.

8. Planetary Health and Indigenous Wisdom:

   Planetary health takes centre stage, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental well-being, cultural preservation, and community health. Integration of Indigenous wisdom and acknowledgment and elevating Indigenous voices emerge as recurrent themes, reflecting a commitment to valuing diverse perspectives.

9. Community Empowerment and Capacity Building:

   There's a universal stress on the importance of community empowerment and capacity building. Building skills, engaging communities, and fostering a sense of ownership are seen as essential components contributing to sustainable solutions.
