The narrator's turn into madness in "The Black Cat" is demonstrated by his chaotic and violent behavior, confused perceptions of reality, strong emotions of guilt and regret, and alcoholism as an escape from his inner frustration. These depressing and strange examples of mental illness are the reasons why we think the narrator is a mad man.

The narrator describes his everyday routines and activities before he becomes absorbed by guilt and madness. Before the darker events happened, the narrator appears to have an ordinary routine. He mentions enjoying the company of animals and being particularly close to his pets, especially a back cat named Pluto(his favorite one). The narrator loved spending time with his pets and staying at home all the time. In addition, he enjoys drinking and socializing with friends, which provides a sense of ordinariness in his life.
