Mary Mackillop was born on the 15th of January 1842 in Melbourne, Victoria. She devoted her life to the service of God and did great things for Australian and New Zealand families. Her family didn't have a lot of money. She once said, "My life as a child was one of sorrow, my home, when I had it, was mostly an unhappy one". Mary Mackillop was the oldest of 7 siblings. She had 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Mary Mackillop was a very kind and caring person like the Good Samaritan. She cared for many people. Some examples are;
- Children who couldn't get an education.
- Old people who were unwell
- People who didn't have a place to live
Her father had an excellent religious education so most of her education was at home, taught by her dad. Mary's first started working as a clerk at the age of 14. She then worked as a governess looking after and teaching her cousin's other farm children their lessons. In 1866 Mary Mackillop started the religious order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Then in 1867, she became a nun - Sister Mary of the Cross. Throughout her life, Mary had a great desire to heed God’s will and to help those in need

THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply, Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Mary Mackillop takes on the characteristics of the Good Samaritan because Mary doesn't care what religion they are from or where they come from, she just cares about their wellbeing and making sure they are happy. Which is the same as the Good Samaritan because even tho his neighbour was a Jew he still loved him and helped him. Mary connects with this parable because she feels pity for those suffering and in need. She doesn't like to just pass by them and not care, she wants to help like how the Good Samaritan did.

LIVING CONDITIONS

During the time Mary Mackillop was alive, the living conditions were harsh. The air was polluted and many illnesses spread throughout the population. The gutters were filled with litter and the streets were covered in horse manure, collected by all the farmers. Human waste was discharged directly into the sewers, which flowed straight into rivers. This contaminated all the rivers and most drinking water sources which also spread diseases at a fast pace. Due to the large numbers of people and convicts moving into the cities, there were not enough houses for all these people to live in. Mary Mackillop's family usually relied on other friends and relatives as they struggled financially. Her family frequently separated from each other because the parents couldn't raise the whole family. Because they struggled with money, they were treated with disrespect and discourtesy.
.

PRIESTLY WORKS OF JESUS

Mary demonstrated priestly work of Jesus Christ. An example of this was when her and Father Julian Woods, the local Catholic priest, opened a school in a disused stable, which provided the necessary space to teach the expanding number of enthusiastic children. This school would later become known as ‘St Joseph’s School’ in Penola. This demonstrates priestly work of Jesus because priests educate others, express their teachings and guide everyone in the right direction. This is what Mary did at her school.

The Mary Mackillop Foundation is a charity that raises money for the poor, the sick, the old and disabled people. Like Mary, they believe that education is key to improving futures and since 1998 they have provided educational scholarships to Indigenous scholars. In 2015, 66 Indigenous or Torres Strait Islander students are supported through their tertiary education with a Mary MacKillop Scholarship. Today, in an increasingly complex society they believe that they must carry on Mary's legacy to continue helping people in need, with the aim of creating more connected, stronger communities. https://www.mackillopfoundation.org.au/about/
