1st chapter summary

Michele Norris introduces her father in the first chapter and describes him as a kind person that cares about others. Norris was at the airport with her sick father bringing him home back to Minneapolis. As they were boarding the plane, two women were ridiculing her father because of his actions due to illness. A few weeks later, her father falls in to a coma and doesn't wake up. Norris introduces her father first to show the importance of him to herself.

2nd Chapter Summary

In the second chapter, Michele tells us about her early life in Mpls. She tells us about her family and how it was to grow up in Mpls. Her mother was full of pride and wasn't afraid to show it. Later when her family decides to sell their house and move into another neighborhood, Norris' mother would make sure to send her kids outside to play in the yard or she would go outside herself and show that she was pregnant. Many of the white neighbors put their houses up for sale when they saw that Michele's family lived there. She explained how living in her neighborhood was sometime hard because of the racism from a few of her neighbors. But she also told us how she had a great childhood with her parents.
