While there will be grace (I love what you said, @rclavagnier) each student will be treated as an individual based on what they do, no one else. The only comparison I want in my classroom is with each student and their own work. I will hold them to the effort they have put in.

I believe I can get the most out of my students when they feel like they belong in my class. No one likes to feel excluded. To combat this I want to incorporate a family-like atmosphere where students are free to ask any questions and are encouraged to build life long friendships with both the instructors and with classmates.
Currently I am a culinary student and everything I do is hands on. Sometimes certain dishes can be difficult to execute well. However every instructor is there to assist me and help me succeed. They will share stories from their own experiences as students which helps me feel more comfortable and overall more confident.
This should be the same for TESOL students. They want to get it right, but can get butterflies in their tummies. I want it to be the standard that we are there for them every step of the way! And who knows? Laughter is the best medicine so why not sprinkle it everywhere? These are just my two cents, don't know if I did this right, but happy to share either way! Stay blessed

I taught in a school that was trying to help children who had been bullied by classmates because they learned differently, looked different, were too big for their age, etc. You might think that they would be kind to each other, but they had to learn how to treat one another. I want my students to see value in the work they produce, and the work they are given. (So this is ultimately an expectation for myself and for my students!) English learning is so much more than just a class, and there are a countless set of possibilities opened up to students when they learn this language. I have no idea what those opportunities will be, but I know that if students don't take advantage of the time now and don't see the purpose now, then they will miss some of the key time that they could be using to develop their skills for the future that God could use in their lives. I would like my students to be full of purpose in the class room, so they can live out their purpose fully outside of their classroom.

Discipline with Grace

Discipline is more than just motivation and if can help teach students the importance of follow through. If I could cultivate a culture of discipline within the hearts of my students, I feel I will have helped them in much more than just learning a language. And it definitely takes discipline to learn a language. I think it will give students a deeper respect for learning and once they see the fruit of it it becomes easier. I mean grace with it, because discipline can e difficult and can look differently for each student. if they mess up, they need to still be told it's okay, lets try again.

I want my classroom to be filled with joy and I want to cultivate a culture of thankfulness. Gratitude is a powerful weapon against anxiety and can help shift people out of anxious spirals. In a classroom people may feel anxious for many reasons and I think gratitude can help combat these anxieties. I would want to regularly take time to consider what I am grateful for and model this to my students... perhaps a weekly gratitude journal.

Being present, rather than being distracted by what else there is on the to-do list or what else is going on during the day, is a gift to oneself and those he or she is with. I struggle often with a distracted mind in my college classes, among other times in my life, and I want to be more intentional to surrender the distractions and anxieties to the Lord so that I can be engaged where I am. I learn more, have greater peace, and connect with those around me on a deeper level when I am not distracted by other thoughts. When both students and teacher are actively engaged and present in a classroom the culture will be better. The classroom will be more lively, there will be a greater sense of community, and people will learn and retain information at a higher level.

One characteristic I would love to see develop in my classroom is determination. I want my students to have the confidence and skills to set a goal and work hard to meet it, even when they encounter roadblocks along the way. So often the youth I work with settle for where they are, or limit themselves by what they think they can't do - I am always so happy for students who can take a deep breath, look at the problem in front of them, and begin exploring new ways to solve it. These students know that it may be hard but they are going to stick it out, and I would love to cultivate that skill in all the children I work with!

This characteristic is really important to me, and would be interesting to see in any classroom. One thing Christ calls us to do is to serve - to serve Him, and to serve those around us. I would love to develop a classroom culture and environment that welcomes people in by showing them selfless love, and invites them to learn to support and serve those around them, too. While this doesn't have as many explicitly education-related applications as other characteristics I have thought of (i.e., determination, problem-solving, etc.), I firmly believe that including this in some capacity in any classroom environment will provide students with a space conducive to meaningful learning.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about my future classroom characteristics/values I think of a family. I want to create a loving and welcoming environment where students feel known when they walk in the door. Respect should be shown in many different ways in the classroom. Respect towards teachers, your fellow classmates and yourself. This is a time where everyone is working hard to achieve a common goal, sometimes people are at different levels and speeds in their learning journey and that is OK!

I believe a classroom should be a place of peace and joy, somewhere students feel safe, seen, and encouraged. I value a friendly and supportive environment where everyone is respected and learning is a shared journey. At the same time, I aim to make the classroom engaging and challenging, inviting students to think deeply, take risks, and grow. For me, it’s about creating a space where students can be themselves, support each other, and discover the joy of learning together.
