The trust vs. mistrust stage is the first stage of Erikson's development stages. This stage is as if infant's needs are dependantly met, they often develop a sense of trust. For example, in this photo, the infant is being fed. If the infant cries, it will be fed. The child develops a sense of trust knowing that if they cry, their mother will feed them.

In this stage, toddlers can learn to exercise and be physical for themselves. Or they will doubt their abilities. For example, in this photo, the child is feeding themselves, though it is creating a mess and becoming more difficult rather than an adult doing it for them.

This stage of development occurs when the child experiences failures and too many rule restrictions. The child may feel guilty about their independence. For example in this photo, the child feels guilty. A possibility could be that the child broke the rules of some sort when they new better.

In this stage of development, children often feel happiness or good feelings from doing things on their own. This can create an inferior feeling. For example, in this photo the child is riding a bike for the first time without training wheels, this makes the child feel inferior and independent.

This stage of development typically takes place later in life towards middle/high school. Children can get a sense of themselves by taking place in roles to test their self-identity and figuring out who they are. For example, if this child is participating in the school choir, the child may find an interest in becoming a singer or part of this group.
