Poetry: If We Must Die by Claude McKay

The first line of the poem "If We Must Die" is "If we must die, let it not be like hogs" which says a lot about how they were hunted like animals. treated like they were less than human. later in the poem, it says to let them die nobly so that even in death the monsters that they run from have to honor them. Showing them overcoming hardships and the battle against racism.

This ties back to themes of black identity, black heritage, hope, and the hardships they had to live through. even after being promised the American dream. They had to fight tooth and nail for what they were promised.
