A few people reached out to Keaton's mom to ask her why she tweeted what she did. Her reason was that she was making a joke and that her tweet was supposed to be "ironic". This gives off the impression that she thinks that the confederate flag is something that we can joke about. The way she dealt with it online was insensitive and has stirred up assumptions about Keaton and her family. 
This website also talks about GoFundMe, which was a way for us to raise money FOR KEATON. Some people have made assumptions that the family was going to keep money for themselves .. however, Lakyn Jones (Keaton's sister), responds in a series of tweets explaining that the money was to help Keaton, and that her family doesn't plan on keeping it for themselves.

People are researching Kimberly Jones's old posts with her family and the Confederate. My question is why people are talking about Keaton's mother and her "funny" and "ironic" photos on the Confederacy. The issue was mainly about Keaton and the fact that he was getting bullied, which has been confirmed by the district, and somehow, his own mother has been dragged into the problem, making the issue more complicated. I understand that those photos have Keaton in it, and racism is as important an issue as bullying, but that wasn't the point that Keaton was trying to get across. This article gave me a little insight on the father of Keaton Jones.  From what I've read in this article, it claims that Keaton's father is a white supremacist and was a member of the Aryan Circle (a prison gang).  This confirms that both of Keaton's parents are racist, but the real question that we have is:  Does this mean Keaton is also racist?  
I think it's quite easy to see why people would assume that he also is racist, since the people that have raised him have shown that type of behavior. So, it wouldn't be a surprise if he started behaving like that. But, we can't be narrow-minded when it comes to this. This child is in junior high and is completely capable of making his own decisions as a person. The type of people his parents and the choices they make shouldn't change our perception of Keaton.  And, regardless of his mother and her behavior online, Keaton deserves our empathy and compassion and support. He deserves it because he is a child and he hasn't done anything wrong.  He is bullied everyday, he doesn't deserve to feel hurt and isolated by others.

Keaton's mom suggests that the pictures that the media has are the only two pics with her near the confederate flag. However; I do not think that his mother's racism should affect the boy. He is an 11 year-old, and shouldn't even understand what the confederate flag even stands for. Even in the picture with his family, Keaton is holding the American flag, while his sibling, is the one holding the confederate flag. To a select few, racist potential exists in Keaton. Despite what the mother has done or hasn't done, Keaton deserves our empathy completely. Growing up in, say a racist household can get to a person and affect their personality. But as some have mentioned, the empathy given to Keaton can change his mindset. The mindset is theoretical, meaning it hasn't shown completely or even developed. Not at least that we know of. The allegations thrown at Keaton that he could be racist haven't been fact-checked and stay as just accusations and not evidence. If he has been bullied, which has been fact checked, by the way, he still deserves empathy. If we can't show a little decency, the problem is us, not Keaton. To me, Keaton deserves the sympathy he is receiving.
