Power-Hungry

Flaws in their actions/beliefs:

He doesn’t actually have any power and ends up making ridiculous and comical commands.

How does the Prince react to them?:

The Prince tries to remain respectful but recognises that the king has no actual power.

“If your majesty wishes to be obeyed promptly, he might give me a reasonable command’ (39)

What about society do they represent?:

The king represents adults’ obsession with power and having authority, even when it is empty.

Hopeless, Escapist, Ashamed

Drinking alcohol to forget his shame

Flaws in their actions and beliefs

His solution ‘drinking’ worsens the problem

He drinks to only escape but doesn’t want to change for the better

How does the prince react to them?

Perplexed, sympathetic but helpless

The prince feeds puzzled and sad because the Logic is circular and meaningless

What about Society do they represent?

People who escape their problems instead of solving them.

The Businessman is serious as when the Little Prince visited him, he was so busy counting that he did not even raise his head at the prince’s arrival.

Flaws in their actions/beliefs :

He neglects enjoyment in life as he is too busy and focused and also believes that owning things makes them look valuable.

How does the Prince react to them? :

The Prince thinks that he is unimaginative, and is puzzled as he found his obsession with ownership meaningless.

What about society do they represent? :

He is like people who only think in a fixed manner and do not come up with creative ideas. They only focus on wealth and possessions, forgetting the simple joys in life.

He drinks to forget he drank.

The prince finds the drinker odd and was very baffled by his actions.

He represents how people in society have bad habits that they are ashamed of, but they are unable to change. He also represents people’s laziness and stupidity of thinking they cam improve without even trying.

Dutiful and disciplined, lights and extinguishes lamps every minute because the planet spins crazy fast.

Blindly follows orders, no rest or reflection.

Prince’s Reaction:

Most sympathetic, thinks he’s not ridiculous — nice, noble, the only one he could befriend. 

What does this say about the society:

Working class grind — people stuck on autopilot doing pointless jobs with no reward.

How does the little prince reacts to them:

Confused

Unimpressed

Does not understand the point of counting stars

Obsession about money/ ownership

Spends time doing useless things

Proud, self-centred, desire praise and attention

Refuses to acknowledge anyone unless being praised, cares about compliments but not the meaning of it

How does the prince react to them?:

The prince is confused by the conceited man’s demands and decides that adults are weird

What about society do they represent?:

People who only notice praises, think highly of themselves and do not accept feedback

he follows actions blindly when when they are unnecessary and meaningless. he does not stop to think about how absurd his actions are and keeps doing the same repetitive useless task.

how does the prince react to them:

he did not find them ridiculous unlike the others. he wanted to help the lamplighter get some rest.

what about society do they represent:

the absurdity of pointless yet dutiful work within society.

Flaws in their actions/beliefs: Constantly keeps drinking to forget he drinks

How does the Prince react to them?: Perplexed, finds the drinker odd

What about society do they represent?: People who are scared to face reality and think that they can achieve things without doing anything

Character traits/ behaviours: Hardworking and dedicated

Flaws in their actions/ beliefs: Gets overworked and cannot rest, caught up in the routine and does not step back to think about the purpose behind his job.

How does the Prince react to them?: He is one of the only grown ups The Little Prince respects and wanted to be friends with him.

What about society do they represent?: He represents the people who are disciplined and committed to their responsibilities but loses sight of purpose, causing them to be overworked.

Self-centred

Flaws in their actions/beliefs:

He thinks that admiration is equal to his worth and wants to be praised. He is also overconfident and thinks very highly of himself

How does the Prince react to them?:

The Prince is confused as he only hears praises and ignores any other conversation. He is also puzzled why the conceited man cares so much about admiration

What about society do they represent?:

It represents how people only place their value on others’ approval and don’t like to face problems. Instead, they make excuses and is obsessed with status

Arrogant and self absorbed

Flaws in their actions/beliefs:

He believes that only admiration from others determines his value and thus only listens to praises.

How does the Prince react to them?:

The Prince wonders why the conceited man cares so much about whether or not others look up and idolise him. He observed as such and decided grown-ups were very odd.

“I admire you,” said the prince, with a slight shrug of his shoulders, “but how can that be of any interest to you?”

What about society do they represent?:

The conceited man represents those who base their own self-worth on others’ opinion and only wish to hear people sing their praises.

Character traits/behaviours:

Focused; only cares about numbers

Flaws in their actions/beliefs:

-he thinks that he owns the stars just because he thought of owning them first

-only cares about the number of stars that he owns

-too focused on the stars that he owns to enjoy life

How does the prince react to them:

He finds the business man amusing, and compares him to the drunkard. He also points out that the business man has no use of the stars.

“ ‘’this fellow,’ the little prince said to himself, ‘reasons a little like my drunkard.’

‘It is amusing,’ thought the little prince. ‘It is rather even poetic. But it’s not terribly serious.”

What part of society do they represent:

-only cares about numbers/ their job

-greedy

He sees him as very important and talks down to the little prince.

‘the geographer is far too important to go sauntering about’ (pg 53)

He is also fixated on his own mindset

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

Due to pride, he does not want to experience things on his own.

“But there he sits and receives the explorers.” (pg 53)

He thinks he’s too important for flowers and does not think they are important. “We do not take note of flowers.” (pg 54)

How does the Prince react to him?:

He was curious about why the geographer thought his flower was unimportant. He was also disappointed that the geographer was so unlearned.

What about society does he represent?:

The geographer represents people who believe themselves more important than the issue they speak about and yet do nothing about their supposed interest. He also represents the people who care only about the theory and facts, but not about living through the actual experience.
