“Each individual student is responsible for his or her contribution so the group product is never anything that affects their grades,” Ballestrini says. “I give experience points for completing tasks instead of grades, and then when it’s time to report grades, the student and I have a conversation about their progress and decide the right grade.”

Latin teacher Kevin Ballestrini is teaching Latin through an online game - "Students play the role of Romans in a reconstruction of ancient Pompeii (or ancient Rome) and have to learn to think, act, create and write like a Roman in order to win the game."
The game focuses on sentence structures. It encourages communication within peers; therefore, this is a more interactive form of instruction.

There may be students that have vision or auditory problems that could prevent them from using this method of learning to succeed in the classroom. In the last paragraph of this case study, Mr. Ballestrini discusses how he can keep track of his students' homework by hopping online and giving feedback that night for them. However, this could be an issue if the student does not have access to the online portal on their computer or have access to a computer at all.

One characteristic that was addressed in the text was that "Students go beyond the classroom walls both to get input for learning and to demonstrate/share learning and thinking." For example, in the text it talked about how in order for the students to win the online game they have to be submerged into their role of a roman by acting, thinking, creating, and writing like one.

Another characteristic that was addressed is that each students voice is heard. An example of this in the text is when Mr. Ballestrini shares how he can use this program and strategy to tell if a student is struggling or if they may start to face obstacles in their learning. Therefore, this program helps him determine if all his students are on track and learning the materials that need to be covered.

1. Provide closed captions for students who may have auditory problems so, they can read what is being said online.
2. Allow time in class for students to work on the online homework that way each student has the same access to completing their homework and can ask questions if they are unsure.
3. If a student has a vision problem provide them with an auditory version that says what others may be seeing or have students work in pairs allowing them to help each other and communicate in person.

Another characteristic of equity that is shown in this case study is that, "Students are able to think about their own thinking and the thinking of their peers". For example, the students can use this program and practice their Latin by directing their character to do certain commands in that language. They are able to see right then and there if it is correct or not by seeing what the character does. If they are incorrect, they can ask a classmate to help them and understand why they had that answer compared to their own.
