It was a tragedy of betrayal began in the 5th century when Saxons invaded across the land of Britain. Salisbury Plain witnessed the treachery of Saxon knifes in the supposedly unarmed peace talk. Too late were the British prince Aurelius Ambrosius and his brother Uther Pendragon returned and defeat the Saxons. To honor the British chides who had been slayed in the Salisbury Plain peace talk, the prince fetched the famous wizard Merlin to build a monument for the dead. Merlin and Uther were sent to steal the astonishing stone circle, “the Giants’ Dance,” in Ireland and succeeded. As the great wizard, Merlin, of course, used his magic to transport the stones from Ireland to the plain of Salisbury. There, the chiefs of Britain, Ambrosius Aurelianus, and Uther Pendragon who was the father of the King Author were honored and buried under the stones. This tale in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of Kings of Britain written in the 12th century, had no evidence to prove its authenticity. Although the tales of Merlin, King Author, and the origin of Stonehenge could be entirely fictional folklores, the existence of these tales could not be ignored on the study of the actual origin of the Stonehenge. There are many overlaps between modern archaeological studies and what was told in the story such as the transportation of the stones to build the Stonehenge and the purpose of burial ceremonies. In Archaeology, we focus on a scientific approach of investigating monuments of history. Folklores, on the other hand, consist of various influences from the aspects such as culture, religion, and personal biases. To utilize sources of folklores in Archeological studies, we have to extract its core value and evaluate the various influence they suffered from the historical context.

The Stone Henge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, the United Kingdom. It has been well known by the world due to the astonishing scale and geometric construction that were almost impossible to accomplish by people and technologies from around 3000 BC to 2000 BC. How the Stonehenge was built, and its exact purpose are still a mystery to the world. I had heard of the site for the first time when I was a kid who was fascinated with books of unsolved mysteries. The little head of mine could not figure out why these ancient people in Britain must put up such massive stones that cost so much labor, money, and time. It was not until recently when I read through different kinds of hypothesizes and researches on the mystery of the Stone Henge that I construct a relatively clearer picture of how and why the monument was built. However, this paper is not intended to discover the true method of how the Stonehenge was constructed or why it was built. It was not a question that could be fully solved by an average college freshman like me. I am trying to use the limited amount of knowledge I possessed to evaluate the methods and theories suggest by much more professional specialists in the archeological and history fields. At the same time, the paper is intended to discover the Stone henge as a prehistorical archeologic site on its influence and relationship with the modern world. It is unquestionable that the Stonehenge hold a special value to the British people as a cultural icon, but more complicated associations were hidden “under” the simple stones with various stakeholders of the site.

The Stonehenge itself consist of three rings of stones in different scales. The very inner rings, which are groups of three stones set up together like doors, were called Trilithons. These are the heaviest stones in the architect and the icons of the whole monuments. Each stone in the Trilithons circle were around 9 meters height and weighted around 25 tons. Supposedly 6 groups of Trilithons should be arranged in the site, but there are only three groups of Trilithons that are still standing today and one group of it was even artificially hold up in the 1950s. Around the central Trilithons is a ring of smaller stones called the blue stones that are weighted about 3 to 4 tons. It is confirmed that the source of the blue stones was the Preseli Hills which is more than 200 kilometers away from where the Stonehenge is located. These smaller stones are where the most controversial argument fell since nobody knows how the people back then can move such massive stones through such great of distance. Outside the bluestones lays a circle of stone pillars called the Sarsen stones with tops called Lintels. These Sarsen stones were putted in pits and the Lintels connect to each other and with the Sarsen stones through joints. It is truly astonishing that how the people back then use their limited architectural technologies to form this perfectly calculated geometric formation with stones that are dedicatedly shaped.

Besides the mystery of how the massive stones in the Stonehenge were set up in the first place, the purpose of the Stonehenge itself had remain controversial. Many argues that the purpose of the Stonehenge is as an observatory of astronomy. For British Neolithic people, their survival is deeply correlated with the weather and seasonal patterns. The central Trilithons of the Stonehenge are aligned with the winter solstice and the opposing summer solstice. Although the solstice patterns could be changed over decades, it is a strong prove that the Stonehenge could be serve as an observatory of early astronomy studies. Other theories suggested that the Stonehenge was served as a religious temple or site for pagan religions in the Neolithic time. The geometric construction reveals the pursuit of perfection and the relationship between religion and geometric arrangements. More than a hundred of bodies had been found under the Stonehenge which could be suggested as the sacred burial or funeral for the elites or priests. However, many of these bodies were not residents but from foreign tribes. So, it left other hypothesizes to argue for a different interpretation of the function. Recently, some scholars also propose that the Stonehenge could be a healing place with certain religious elements since the bodies under the stones are usually deformed or disabled. All these theories are plausible but none of it was proved to be the actual purpose of the Stonehenge.
