The course The Leadership Experience was end, but the learning and improving leadership skills will never end. When I look back and think about what I have learn in the whole course, there were two major directions that I want to work on from now on: Servant Leadership and practice Path-Goal Theory. This website is my planning to achieve the goals with some ideas of actions plans.

Goal 1 - Servant Leadership

To practice Servant Leadership, I need to focus on influence on others, strengths, leasing, and long-term benefit. I wonder where is the best place that I can practice my leadership skills over and over again. School is one of the places that give us lots of chance that working in a team but it takes too long if I want to adjust my leading style and start over. So, I decide to practice in League of Legends, my favorite video game. In every single game, I and the other four teammates will be assigned a specific role depends on our intention. People usually play on their own and doesn’t really care about others. If I can jump out and use the skills of servant leadership: listen on what they need, focus on what they are good at, and try to influence them to work as a team, I might become the leader and reach our common goal: win the game. Each game will take about 30 mins to finish and if I fail on being a servant leader, I can start over next game. Once I feel comfortable to be a servant leader, I can try to practice the leading skills in my team assignment in the next semester.

Path-Goal Theory is a way to motivate people to work. When I really study about Path-Goal Theory, I was surprised because that is exactly why people like me loved to play video games. We have a clear idea about the path to reach our goal; we can check about how we are doing during the game and get a reward on each small success within one game. So, in the next semester, I want to apply the Path-Goal Theory and the learning from game to my group projects. I will give acknowledge, recognition, to others when they got small success during the process and try to make them feel like a reward.

Leadership can be everywhere in my life and not necessary to be in the working environment. In the short-term planning of my life, I won’t be involved in a teamwork required job and I need to find somewhere else to practice my leadership skills. Gaming is already part of my life and hopefully, it can be beneficial to me more than a way to relax. Although it is in a game, people are still people; we have a common goal, assigned position and role, and we need a leader. My learning journey won’t be blank during the winter break and hopefully, I can apply what I learn to the future team assignments and even my career.

Task-orientation was the style that I used to use when I am in a leading position. It is easy and simple; I just need to focus on the work and result and that really my life easier. However, I missed lots of chance to practice being supportive of a team. So, I decide to practice Servant Leadership and Path-Goal Theory. Hopefully, I can play a good supportive leader if the situation needs me to be supportive.
