Being able to understand the story through a different perspective will allow you to sympathize with the character. That's what Obama is referring to when he says "get in somebody's shoes."  This requires a person to be open minded and be able to see the story through a person's point of view. This short novel contained many short stories that allow the reader to see Esperanza grow to a young woman. Chapters such as "Hips", "My name" and "Sire" allow the reader to experience growing up through Esperanza's point of view. The reader was able to feel a connection with Esperanza because personal thoughts, feelings and emotions were shared throughout the novel. The reader was also able to get in the shoes of Esperanza and experience cultural and socioeconomic differences. 

This was my favorite work of literature because the style was very poetic and it contain different stories within the novel. The mother wanted her daughter to grow up becoming the traditional housewife. The mother had no idea that she was making her daughter question her words. The mother tells her daughter that, “on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming; don’t sing benna in Sunday school…….but I don’t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school.” This only shows the perspective of the mother. The girl is way too young to get in her mother shoes and try to understand why she is her mother being very demanding. The  poem "Selfish," is a reflection of how love can make a person blind. "what i miss most is how you loved me, but what i didn't know was how you loved me had so much to do with the person i was. it was a reflection of everything i gave to you. coming back to me. how did i not see that (Kaur,130). This is an example of a person being stuck on a perspective of one's self. When she was able to get in the shoes of a person away from a toxic relationship she was able to realize how much she was worth. Being able to see a harmful relationship from a different point of view allows a person to make better choices and see life in a new way. This poem has a strong message about equality and is transmitted through the perspective of an African-American individual. This shows that during this time period there was lack of equality because people weren't able to put themselves in the shoes of people that were viewed as inferior. Rose said, "Don’t you think I had dreams and hopes?....You not the only one who’s got wants and needs...I took all my feelings, my wants and needs, my dreams…and I buried them inside you...I planted myself inside you and waited to bloom. And it didn’t take me no eighteen years to find out the soil was hard and rocky and it wasn’t never gonna bloom." During the play we were only able to get a sneak peek of Rose's character through Troy, but when Rose did her monologue we were able to understand her sacrifices, thoughts and disappointments. There was a feeling of anger and sorrow that can be seen through the way Rose decided to express herself. In the beginning of the story Grant was not sympathetic to Jefferson. He had no intention in helping him believe he was a man before being executed. Miss Emma constantly repeated, "He doesn't have to go." This shows the insensitivity of Grant. Towards the end of the novel, Grant was able to finally get in Jefferson's shoes and learn that he was a hero for doing the one thing that he didn't have the courage to do, go against the white people expectations. Being able to see childhood ending through her point of view has a greater impact in the transition from a child to adolescent. This transition is different for everyone, especially between boys and girls. Through the perspective of a boy, losing their toys might not have the same impact that it has for a girl. This shows that the father has been drinking, but the boy describes it as if his father was dancing. This poem can be seen as innocent because it is told through the perspective of a child. One important thought that Eveline had was, "Home! She looked around the room, reviewing all its familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many years, wondering where on earth all the dust came from. Perhaps she would never see again those familiar objects from which she had never dreamed of being divided." Everyone has experienced the feeling of departure and could connect to Eveline. By being able to get in Eveline's shoes the reader is able to understand why she is indecisive about leaving or staying. It is clear that Eveline has a strong connection to the only place she has known as home, this is why it is difficult for Eveline to leave. The band was inspired to write this song after a close friend of the main singer was abducted. The song has some lyrics that resonate with being able to get into someone else's shoes. The lyrics say, "Everyone's been searching high and low
And your mother's worried sick. Dearest daddy's lost his grip
While the whole world's watching. Candlelight vigils being held in silence
On the channel four.
And they've knocked on every door. Every place you've been before." This song had a great impact on me because I was able to feel the agony of the parents when they are trying to look for their lost daughter. Parents will look high and low, move mountains, and do anything to find their children.
