I think it is important to first highlight the progressive advancements that have been made in our society. MLK's impact on our society as a whole must be acknowledged and respected. He led a social and political revolution in our society to no longer accept racial segregation and worked to abolish Jim Crow laws in the United States. The work of Dr. King cannot be understated in its importance for US History and progressive moments, however, we cannot be blind to the change in platforms of racial inequality in the US. I look to the quote by Malcolm X for example, "If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there's no progress. If you pull it all the way out that's not progress. Progress is healing the wound that the blow made." In the United States, we abolished slavery and up came the rise of Black Codes. Then in the US came Jim Crow laws, where King proved vital in abolishing these laws. It seems in the US when social change is made there always comes a way for the politically powerful to put laws back into place to continue with the control of its populous, and in particular the African American community. Our political leaders may have pulled out one knife, and maybe even healed the wound that was made. But with the removal of one knife, it seems like another is simply inserted. We as Americans then must ask ourselves, has social progress been made, or has the platform of control simply changed?
