He was working all day just for him to go to sleep at the movies. I think the reward is more important, because that's what Soto was trying to get in the first place. I can almost guarantee that if Soto's mom didn't take him to the movies, he wouldn't have work that hard(unless his mom told him).

Got his mom in a good mood. And then fell asleep at the drive in movie.
So at least he did the chores and impressed his mom. His mom was happy but again he didn't do it from the heart.
